There is something calming about deep horizons. There’s a special feeling in staring out into an endless expanse of water. It feels like being on another planet. Engineering surrounding me on all sides, and a sense of pride in being able to contribute to the greater good.
This won’t last forever, which is why I feel it’s important to document what life out here is like. Maybe someday in the future, someone will look back at these images with gratitude that someone chose to tell the story through photographs.
It’s a unique opportunity to document a world that won’t last forever. Through this print store, I want to share these moments and preserve a glimpse of life at sea, something that may one day exist only in photographs.

Part I: Light
Light is the foundation of every photograph.
Before composition, before timing, before the subject itself, there is light.
In this first part of the series we look at how light shapes a scene.
1. Understanding light direction
The direction light comes from shapes the entire scene.
It determines where shadows fall and how depth is created in the image.
• Side light reveals texture, shape, and depth by creating shadows across the subject. This is often the most interesting light for landscapes and portraits.
• Front light comes from behind the photographer and illuminates the subject evenly. It reduces shadows, but can sometimes make a scene feel a bit flat.
• Back light comes from behind the subject. It can create glowing edges, silhouettes, and dramatic separation from the background.
2. Soft light
Soft light is created when the light source is diffused by clouds, fog, haze, or other atmospheric conditions.
Instead of sharp shadows, the light spreads evenly across the scene.
• Soft light reduces contrast and softens shadows, making transitions between light and dark more gradual.
• It simplifies the scene, allowing shapes, colors, and atmosphere to stand out without harsh distractions.
• Soft light often creates a calm and atmospheric mood, which is why it works so well for landscapes and moody environments.
3. Hard light
Hard light occurs when the light source is direct and unobstructed, such as sunlight breaking through clouds or a clear sky.
This type of light creates strong shadows and high contrast within the scene.
• Hard light increases contrast, making the difference between light and shadow much stronger.
• It adds drama and structure, emphasizing shapes, textures, and movement.
• Hard light can make a scene feel more powerful and intense, especially when light cuts through clouds or hits the subject at a low angle.

I thought it was time to share a bit about a part of my life that has shaped much of my adult years.
In 2015, my life in uniform began. It turned into 7 years of service before I hung up my military boots and sought a new path.
My years in the Norwegian Armed Forces taught me an incredible amount and shaped me into the person I am today. Loyalty, independence, resilience, care, respect, responsibility, and courage.
You learn a lot about what you’re made of, the immense potential we humans have if we only have the willpower and discipline to endure the tough moments.
This has been surprisingly transferable to photography. From how the training in weapon handling translates to handling a camera, to navigating challenges like feeling a lack of progress or dealing with criticism on social media. Learning how to handle adversity in demanding situations.
