069/100 nice! Here’s another shrinkidink charm I made using my hand carved mushroom stamp from December. The background is my standard mix of scraps including a strip of muslin, art foamie tissue, dictionary page, and a painted piece of a kids learn how to write workbook. I threw in some of that orange thread again and I am really enjoying orange a lot these days. I love how this one turned out! #100dayproject #collagecluster #mixedmediamushroom
068/100 for my #100dayprojecr2026 is one of my attempted zinnias I tried for ’s lessons this month. I had this idea that if I collaged on my flowers it would be a bit less intimidating than painting them out. I really love Cathy’s art foamies collection but sadly not in my limited budget so thought maybe I could do some oil pastel carbon paper transferring to make some more stylized flowers. This one looks pretty neat I thought but not quite the look I wanted to end up with. However the trial flower worked perfectly for a cluster! I used the cut off stem of one of my zinnias I used in my fodderdex cards so nothing goes to waste. I used my own art foamie stamped on tissue for the background with a scrap of orange and some orange stitches. Oh look! They aren’t even little pluses this time 😂. I may be getting into a comfortable groove with my clusters…but I’m still going! I’ll get to 100 one day…
It’s #fodderdex time! I’ve been enjoying making Rolodex cards to go in my November fodderdex box and this month with is no different! I made one using my fodder challenge zinnias (much more on theme with how the project is designed) and goodness do I love how it turned out. Patience and time was too short for me though so I went with the collaged and more stylized flowers for my tray so I made a card to match that as well! Those muted background botanical papers are so dreamy and they really make those flowers pop right off them! What a wonderful project and inspiration from Cathy! #MayFodderSchool5
067/100 for #the100dayproject2026 with some leftovers from my Fodder School project this month! This actually turned out pretty huge so not really going to fit in my box…but I’ll just have to shove it in there. Still going!
066/100 is the third in my “collage book bugs” clusters with this lady bug. I used a piece of my art foamie stamped tissue again and really love putting little stitches into the blobs like that. How charming!
065/100 is a little bee and some daisy stitches! Turns out those are really hard to do on paper…
064/100 and another cluster with a bug from a collage book and some ephemera bits. I found another piece of that art foamie stamped tracing paper I used at the beginning of this challenge and forgot how much it totally completed my clusters for me. Onward!
Today’s the launch of my collection I made for 5! (Link in my bio) I’m teaching stamp carving next month when my class is released but figured I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to make some foamies too. Stamp carving definitely isn’t for everyone (it’s meticulous and slow and picky) so this is a great alternate option - plus extra versatile since they work with ink and acrylic paint! I got a chance to test out a few of them during ’s lessons last month and absolutely adore using them on tissue for a transparent layer in collage. Wendy ’ under paper/procreate papers are jaw dropping and what a thrill to see someone else use my designs 😍. Head over to Art Foamies to take a look at the three sets “marks”, “tweets and twigs”, and “mcm fun.” What a treat! What do you think? Do you use stamps in your fodder making? Which one would you want to try first?
🎉 It’s official! Please join me in welcoming the incredibly talented Kate McCurrach as one of our Fodder School 5 teachers! 🎨💌

Kate McCurrach has been a beloved member of the Fodder School community for years — constantly inspiring us with her thoughtful, layered, deeply personal artwork. She’s a self-taught mixed media artist based in Kamloops, BC, Canada, with a passion for storytelling through collage, salvaged paper, and unexpected materials.

After a creative life filled with science-themed crafts, sewing, painting, and raising her kids through serious life challenges, Kate found her way back to art for her own mental health and healing. And when she found Fodder School… she was all in. ❤️

In Fodder School 5, Kate will be guiding us through our much-loved annual mail art swap — a month full of connection, colorful postcards, and meaningful handmade pieces.

But first… you’ll get to learn from her during Fodder Challenge 2025, where she’ll teach us how to make magnetic bookmarks from our favorite collage fodder. YES. PLEASE. 🔖🧲

Kate is the perfect mix of creativity, curiosity, and heartfelt authenticity — and we are SO lucky to have her on this year’s teaching team!

I recently got into an art gallery show that required a headshot and short biography. This would normally cause me all sorts of anxiety but instead I just took a breath and tackled the task. Is it sort of uncomfortable to try and talk about yourself and your zero academic art training? You bet. Is it going to kill me? Of course not. It’s doable. I also told myself if that when I make it to 2K followers (a randomly selected scale I didn’t think I would get to), that I’d do an introduction and let everyone know some things about me…and here we are.

My name is Kate McCurrach and after a lifetime of my last name being mispronounced I went with as my handle since it’s much easier to pronounce, spell, and remember. Here are some (maybe interesting?) facts about me:

- I live in Kamloops, B.C., Canada with my “academically art trained turned electrician” husband Fraser and our spawn Evie (7) and Jack (5).

-I’ve been struggling with a number of chronic illnesses basically since I hit puberty, and am currently too sick to hold down a job. I have chronic nausea, lupus, endometriosis, and fibromyalgia and struggle with mental health problems that are so often associated with living with chronic pain and fatigue.

-I decided to jump back into doing art mid January of 2023 and before that hadn’t taken an art class since highschool. I was hopeful art would help me cope with chronic illness as a self care therapy.

-I have a BSc in cellular, molecular, microbial biology and spent some time working in a microbiology lab and a genetic testing lab. I graduated with a 4.25 GPA.

-I got sick shortly after graduating and decided to slow down, work at Sbux, and wait for thoracic surgery to remove a softball sized tumor that was at the bottom of my esophagus between my lungs.

-While stuck on bedrest after surgery, I decided to start up a cute science themed crafts shop on Etsy and made a bunch of embroidered pouches, finger puppets, and plush germs. This was so fun and I ended up making pinback buttons, magnets, mirrors, postcards, embroidery art,and a bunch of colourful jewelry too.

Crud. I wrote too much. My life story will be continued in the comments.
