One thing we are realizing lately is that while we would absolutely love to operate like a traditional walk in bakery shop, the only reason we are able to keep our little bakery open daily from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. is because Shop the Fridge works as a self serve porch pickup system.
One challenge we run into is that we stock the fridge before 8 a.m., but after that, the day tends to take on a life of its own. We are often deep in baking, running for supplies, packaging orders, playing with our toddler, or out for pickups, so the reality is that we usually have no idea what is still available throughout the day unless we are physically home and able to go check ourselves.
We also do not always know exactly what will be stocked ahead of time. A lot of what appears in the fridge depends on what is happening in the kitchen that week, what larger orders we are fulfilling, and what extras we may have from cakes, cookies, cheesecake, slices, or corporate orders. Some days the fridge is overflowing with buckets and sweets, other days it is smaller and more limited.
We also understand that our Cash Only Days can sometimes feel frustrating, especially because customers are able to pay by e transfer on other days. The reason for that difference honestly comes down to keeping the bakery sustainable behind the scenes. Those little $5 try it items are intentionally kept very low cost and very low profit so people can sample flavours without spending a fortune, but once transaction fees, taxes, and packaging are removed, we often make almost nothing on them.
We know not everyone carries cash anymore, and we truly understand that. We are simply trying to find the balance between keeping things affordable for customers while still keeping this little family bakery sustainable behind the scenes.
We also have a full Shop the Fridge section on the website explaining how everything works, but it seems like there may still be ways we can make things clearer and easier to navigate.
If you have shopped the fridge before, we would genuinely love your thoughts. What would make the experience easier or clearer for you and what would help most?
Hey Sugar! Broadcasting live from the Pink Floral Teacup. 🫖
It has been a little while since I shared a life update that didn’t involve viral buckets or all things sugar, so here we are.
We will be taking a small holiday pause beginning tomorrow through May 26. It's certainly not because I would ever willingly take a single day off... you know me better than that by now. I would happily stay up all night and wake before the sunrise just to keep baking for you if I could.
But this week, I need a little reset.
If you’ve been here for a while, you know that since last August I’ve been navigating some health challenges that are a little tricky to manage. This week, I'm beginning a new treatment, and I need to give my body the time and space to adjust.
The last few months have been exciting, overwhelming, joyful, exhausting, and deeply humbling all at once. This little bakery has grown in ways we never expected, and we are endlessly grateful for every order, message, visit, and kind word. We also know we need a brief pause to regroup and make sure we are building things sustainably moving forward.
So this week will be spent resting, reorganizing, reordering supplies, and planning carefully for what comes next. We are actively working on ways to expand offerings, increase production, and make this next season of MacKay’s Bakery even sweeter so that we come back with a fresh menu, fresh ideas, and full hearts.
We’ll be back on May 27 and before anyone panics, yes, I promise, promise, promise… Caramel Carrot Cake is staying on the menu for good.

At first, your mind can hardly make sense of it. You keep asking yourself what on earth is happening and why so many people are suddenly watching this little corner of our life.
It all began on March 10, when shared one of our buckets. After six years in business, so many markets, orders, and batches of the same beloved recipes, it felt strange to suddenly watch something so familiar to us become something people were seeking out from all over.
One day it was an ordinary dance, and the next, people were arriving at the porch saying they had seen us on TikTok. I found myself downloading the app just to understand what everyone else already seemed to know.
The phone rings constantly now, the orders pile higher, and there are moments when I stand in the middle of my kitchen wondering whether any of it is real. There have been so many tired and overwhelmed tears, that are still laden in joy. It is truly life changing to watch something you built slowly and over many years suddenly begin to matter to people beyond your own walls and region.
Naturally, every fairytale has its slightly less charming side too. Some people are kinder and more patient than others, and my heavens, our residential kitchen could certainly be bigger. The reality is that it is one very busy toddler mom and her whole family trying their best to keep pace with something that grew far faster than anyone expected.
Still, nothing could eclipse the kindness we have been shown. The family, the friends, the regulars, and the people online have wrapped their arms around this little bakery in ways I will never forget. And of course, there are our neighbours, who have been extraordinary since the very beginning. They bring friends, offer parking spots, stop by for snacks, and sit out in lawn chairs counting “fridge visits” as though it were a neighbourhood sport.
So yes, the business has changed these past few months. But in many ways, it has sharpened my creativity, strengthened my confidence, and reminded me that sometimes the smallest things, made steadily, can mean more than you'll ever know.
From all of us, thank you. x

I think it might be time for us to do something a little extra creative. After all, some of the best Cake Buckets we have ever made began the exact same way: somebody standing in the kitchen late at night saying, “Okay, but imagine if we...?” while holding a spoon like they were about to change the trajectory of dessert history.
So, we are officially opening the floor and inviting you into the wonderfully chaotic little world that is MacKay’s Bakery product development.
We want you to create the next signature Cake Bucket.
We aren't looking for an over-done, obvious flavour combination. We want the fullest most dramatic vision you can think of. Let us know the cake layers, the frosting situation, the fillings, the crunchies, the drizzles and the special little details that make absolutely no sense until suddenly they become the only thing anybody can think about for two straight weeks.
We want the dessert your grandmother would have proudly served on a glass pedestal dish in 1963. We want the gas station snack cake remade into something wildly excessive. We want the recipe inspired by a childhood memory, a family gathering, a church basement potluck, a road trip, a after supper pie, a birthday cake from 1998, or something you once ate at midnight and still dream of today.
After that, our official Pink Glass Table Tasting Council will take over. Yes, this is a real committee. A very serious and deeply committed group of local taste testers who are fully prepared to debate buttercream ratios, caramel distribution, texture integrity, nostalgia impact, and whether a dessert feels emotionally correct in the same way some people discuss politics or sports.
The winning flavour will become part of our June Bucket Drop, and the winner will receive a free 34oz. Cake Bucket on us.
To enter, send us:
• Bucket name
• Cake flavour
• Fillings/frostings
• Crunches or mix ins
• Sauces/drizzles
• The inspiration behind it
Email us, DM us, communicate however you want... but one idea only, so make it a yummy one! All submissions must be sent in by Sunday, May 17.
Happy creating Bucket Fam!
xo
I think one of the biggest signs that your mom is also your best friend is realizing you never really get tired of being around her.
It’s kind of funny in our case because we live on the same street and see each other almost every single day. If a day passes where I do not see her, it feels unusual somehow, like the rhythm of the day got thrown off a little. Even years ago, I still always wanted to stop by my parents’ house, and now somehow I want to see them even more.
I know some people would probably hear that and immediately joke about codependence, but I don’t think that is what this is at all. I think I simply grew up genuinely liking my mother as a person.
I love talking to her, I love spending time with her and I love the perspective and outlook she carries. She has always been the person I call first, the person I tell everything to, and the person who somehow understands what I mean even when I am explaining something badly while simultaneously trying to manage a toddler climbing across my lap.
There is something deeply comforting about being understood by someone who has known you your entire life.
My mom had me at 26, which feels wild to me now because I had Tessa at 39. I think that age difference shaped our relationship in ways I did not fully appreciate until I became a mother myself. She was always my mom, but she was also somebody I genuinely wanted to be like. We could spend entire days together doing completely ordinary things and still laugh the whole time. Running errands with her somehow still feels comforting in the same way it did when I was little.
I think Mother’s Day starts to feel different as you get older. It becomes less about one Sunday in May and more about realizing who stood beside you through every version of yourself you have ever been.
I got incredibly lucky with her.
She is my mom, she is my best friend, and I do not think a single day goes by where I am not grateful that those two things became the very same person.
Ironically, my background probably should have made me less trusting than most people. Before the bakery, my world was forensic psychology, community safety, systems work, and criminal intelligence, which means I spent years studying what happens when people and communities go very right and very wrong.
So contrary to popular belief, I am not wandering through life blissfully unaware that bad things happen. I am deeply aware that people are capable of cruelty, deception, selfishness, and terrible choices because I have studied those patterns academically, professionally, and personally too. If anything, I probably know the world’s sharp edges more intimately than most.
I still choose to trust people. Everyone may not be as wonderful as hoped, but I realized a long time ago that if I allowed every bad experience to harden me completely, then I would fundamentally change who I am as a person. I do not want to move through life assuming everybody is dangerous, dishonest, or secretly plotting to steal a cheesecake bucket from my porch.
So yes, technically someone could empty the fridge tomorrow. Somebody could smash it, steal from it, or ruin it entirely. But what has actually happened over the last year has been the complete opposite.
People message me because they forgot fifty cents. People send extra e-transfers because they missed a loonie and feel guilty about it. Complete strangers have treated our tiny little porch bakery with an extraordinary amount of honesty, warmth, and kindness.
The fridge has become so much bigger than dessert for our family. Tessa helps us stock it, waves at customers through the window, and gets genuinely excited every time the fridge needs refilling again. It has become this strange little old fashioned ritual that reminds me that the kind of community people insist no longer exists is actually alive and well.

If my life were a romantic comedy, this would be the moment when the main character finally notices the steady love that’s been waiting in the wings, standing in the kitchen, holding toast, ready to be seen. That is this cookie: sweet, nostalgic, and as comforting as one of Grandma’s crocheted blankets made from those iconic multi-coloured squares, draped over the rocker for chilly evenings or tucked around you when you need a little extra warmth.
Our Strawberry Buttered Toast Cookie officially debuted in 2021 but calling it “new” never sat right with me. It’s been woven into my life long before I thought to put it on a menu, a flavour stitched into countless memories. It all began with my Grams, in a place where sunlight filtered through lace curtains, the smell of fresh instant coffee filled well-loved ceramic mugs, a butter dish sat on the windowsill, a tin of sewing notions waited in case a button needed mending and an old rotary phone sat alongside her tattered handwritten phone book. My mom carried it forward in much the same way since I was little. Sourdough bread, crumpets or English muffins, toasted just enough; butter, salted and warm, melting straight through; strawberry jam, always smooth, spread like you’re caring for someone’s soul.
I grew up surrounded by these rituals, not realizing I’d spend my life returning to them. Now, I make the same toast, early in the morning and late at night in my own kitchen, thinking about how some things never change, even as everything else does.
Transforming the product into a cookie marked its arrival at a lasting home; now, it is firmly established as part of our Heritage Line. It was like borrowing a line from an old love story and hoping it feels true for someone else. Watching this flavour make its rounds lately has been surreal, a plot twist for others, but for me, it always felt like that familiar ending. If you’ve seen it and wondered, I hope you’ll try the original, inspired by my Grandma Greig (nee MacKay). Some stories aren’t about what’s new, they’re about what never left.
