Within hours of protests erupting on 28 December, regime-aligned accounts began dismissing authentic images as "AI slop." They introduced manipulated content through fake opposition personas, then amplified their own "exposés" to cast doubt on real documentation.
There's a term for this: "the liar's dividend". When any image can be dismissed as possibly synthetic, those in power no longer need to suppress speech. They only need to raise questions that undermine belief in shared reality.
Through 's Deepfake Rapid Response Force, we've been validating legitimate human rights documentation that's been falsely tagged as AI. We're tracking coordinated disinformation campaigns whilst human rights organisations work to accurately count the dead.
On 8 January, Iran imposed a total internet and communication blackout. Many Iranians abroad are still struggling to hear from their loved ones in Iran. The information fog has thickened to near impenetrability, death toll estimates struggle to come out in this fog with most estimates capturing upwards of 12,000 murdered protesters.

I don’t know who Al Jazeera’s Iranian reporter in Tehran is.
