Don’t miss The DOKU Trilogy by Lu Yang at FOTO ARSENAL WIEN, on view until September 6, 2026.

The trilogy explores the dissolution of selfhood in relation to digital, biological, and spiritual systems. Across DOKU The Self (2022), DOKU The Flow (2024), and DOKU The Creator (2025), the Chinese artist employs video game aesthetics, motion-capture technology, and Buddhist philosophy to interrogate where identity resides when consciousness can be rendered, replicated, and endlessly reborn.

Special thanks to for the LED wall that made this powerful installation possible.
In my two most recent new works, I used the traditional Chinese opera technique of shuaya — “teeth manipulation” — as facial motion-capture data, translating it onto DOKU’s face. 🦷🎭

Shuaya is an extremely distinctive oral performance technique in traditional Chinese opera. It is often referred to as the “mouth-changing” technique of Ninghai Pingdiao opera, and is sometimes described alongside Sichuan opera’s face-changing as “face-changing in the West, teeth-manipulation in the East.” The performer holds fangs inside the mouth and, through precise control of the cheeks, lips, teeth, tongue, and breath, makes the fangs emerge, retract, turn, hide, pierce, and move inside the oral cavity. It is not simply a form of facial expression, but a traditional bodily technique that pushes the human face toward states of the monstrous, the majestic, the wrathful, and the otherworldly. 👹✨

The training for shuaya is extremely difficult. Performers must gradually accustom the mouth to sharp fangs, beginning with only a few teeth and slowly learning to control more over time. For many shuaya artists, the learning process involves repeated injuries to the mouth, gums, and tongue, yet they must continue practicing day after day until the fangs can truly be controlled as if they were part of the body. 🩸🦷

When a technique like this — originating from traditional Chinese opera, from inside the oral cavity, and requiring years of bodily training — is captured through a facial motion-capture system and then enters DOKU’s digital face, what kind of facial landscape will it generate? 🧬👁️

A cybernetic sanctuary between illusion and awakening. On the occasion of the Venice Biennale, Lu Yang presents DOKU The Illusion, the fourth chapter of the artist’s ongoing series centered on DOKU, a digital avatar created from their own face. Blending Buddhist philosophy, artificial intelligence and contemporary visual culture, the installation combines sculptures, mirrored architecture and a monumental screen to question the nature of reality and the boundaries of identity.

Presented at the Espace Louis Vuitton Venezia during La Biennale di Venezia, the exhibition features “DOKU The Illusion,“ a new installation by Lu Yang. Part of the Fondation Louis Vuitton’s hors les murs program, it extends the artist’s ongoing “DOKU” series, centered on a digital avatar derived from his own likeness.

The presentation combines film and sculpture within an immersive, chapel-like setting, where the latest chapter unfolds on a monumental screen. Blending live action and AI-generated imagery, the work follows the avatar DOKU through shifting landscapes, exploring themes of identity and digital reincarnation.

Opening tonight at Foto Arsenal Wien💥 LU YANG: THE DOKU TRILOGY

explores the dissolution of selfhood in relation to digital, biological, and spiritual systems. Through video game aesthetics, motion-capture technology, and Buddhist philosophy, the artist interrogates where identity resides when consciousness can be rendered, replicated, and endlessly reborn.

Vienna Digital Cultures 2026 explores forms of digitally mediated togetherness and individuality under the theme: Alone or Together? The DOKU avatar, modelled on the artist’s own likeness yet untethered from any singular body or moment, embodies the condition the festival sets out to examine. Circulating continuously, visible yet elusive, present without being locatable. In this sense, THE DOKU TRILOGY suggests that what technology has made newly strange, certain philosophical traditions may have understood all along.

🗓️ On view: May 22–September 6, 2026. Tue–Sun 11:00–19:00.

Closing Sunday, May 3: THE GREAT ADVENTURE OF MATERIAL WORLD (2019–2020) is one of the artist Lu Yang’s most intricate and conceptually ambitious projects. In the Museum’s Jane Henson Amphitheater, visitors can experience the environment through a projected single-channel film or by playing the game on a custom-built arcade.

Follow an androgynous protagonist, Material World Knight, through distinct episodes that move between conflict, transformation, and renewal, echoing samsara, the ceaseless cycle of birth, death, and rebirth across different planes of existence.
The opening of my solo exhibition at in New York has been an extraordinary journey.🔮🪬🔮
Especially in today’s complex global context and under challenging economic conditions, it is truly precious that institutions are still willing to support independent artists like myself and ensure that the work can be seen. This support fills me with more gratitude than ever toward all my collaborators.🥹🙏🪷🙏🥹

Amant understands deeply that the presentation of digital art relies heavily on technical equipment. As a non-profit art institution, they still equipped the exhibition with 4K high-lumen projectors and a 4K LED wall, striving to present the works in their most powerful state. During the installation, they even transported and arranged large stones to build mani cairns⛰️and fulfilled every request I made with admirable professionalism and dedication.🙌🏼🫶🏼🙌🏼

At the same time, a Tibetan calligraphy work by Dzogchen Pema Tashi Rinpoche, from Dzogchen Monastery—one of the Six Great Mother Monasteries of the Nyingma School, holder of the Great Perfection Longchen Nyingtik lineage—was also brought into this space, planting the seeds of liberation as it meets with every visitor.🤲🏼🪷🤲🏼

The aspiration prayer reads🔥☝️🔥:

May I become a refuge and guide for all sentient beings,
Food for the hungry, and sweet water for the thirsty,
Clothing for those suffering from cold, and cool breeze for those affected by heat,
A friend to the lonely, a helper to the helpless,
A healer and medicine for the sick, a support and a ferry for those without refuge.
🤲🏼🫀🤲🏼
My heartfelt thanks to all museums and institutions who choose to collaborate for the very core of the work itself, to curators Tobi and Ian for their trust and commitment, and to all staff members and audiences. May my works transform into a mirror and a light, illuminating and inspiring hearts in this impermanent and illusory world. ⚡️🫧⚡️
