We don’t need to look to the stars for alien life. Encounters in the deep sea feel like a glimpse into another galaxy. Here this bloody belly comb jelly (Lampocteis cruentiventer) drifts like a living nebula using rows of iridescent cilia to navigate. A masterpiece of evolution in the abyss.

Native to Equador, these frogs are usually found in Chocoan tropical and subtropical rainforest usually near streams. Infact, the males take their tadpoles to areas with streams and flowing water. •

The Phantasmal Poison Dart Frog prefer their meals with extra poison. ☠️ A huge factor that contributes to their toxin production comes from their diet of insects such as ants, flies, spiders, and termites. A combination of chemicals from these insects interact in the glands of the frogs to produce toxins. However, when these frogs are maintained in captivity a controlled diet prevents them from having the same toxicity in their skin. •

Let’s hop 😉 onto meet our new feature, the Phantasmal Poison Dart Frog (Epipedobates tricolor). These vibrant frogs secrete epibatidine which is toxic and may cause severe damage to its susceptible prey. Historically, the poison from these frogs was used to coat arrows and darts as a hunting or battle tactic. Epibatidine is able to interact with certain receptors in order to transmit pain sensations. Large doses may cause numbness and or paralysis. However, epibatidine was once used as a drug for its powerful pain killing abilities that surpass morphine. •

This opportunistic predator is a master of camouflage. The Tomistoma is usually found in solitary and can be active day or night. While blending in with the colours of its environment, it remains half submerged underwater with only its eyes and nostrils sticking out. This technique allows it to use the element of surprise and hunt prey such as monkeys, wild pigs, otters, snakes, fish, and birds. 🐍🐗🐊

Native to Peninsular Malaysia, Java, Sumatra, and Borneo, the Tomistoma (Tomistoma schlegelii) is one of the largest crocodiles reaching up to 5 m in length. It’s name refers to its distinctive mouth. The Greek words tomos (sharp) and stoma (mouth) translate to “sharp mouth.” False gharials such as the Tomistoma are distinguished by their long and narrow snout that contain 76-84 teeth. 🐊

He’s got his eye on you! 👁 This intense stare is coming from the tomistoma (Tomistoma schlegelii) also known as the false gharial which is a fresh water crocodile. 🐊 Crocodiles lack sex chromosomes and rely on another mechanism to determine the sex of their offspring. 🧐 One third of the embryonic development of the eggs is known as the thermosensitive period. This is due to the fact that the surrounding temperature in which the egg is incubated determines the sex of the offspring. Warmer temperatures 🌞 lead to androgenic hormones being produced and forming a male crocodile. In contrast, cooler temperatures 🌥result in the hatching of a female crocodile. After the thermosensitive period has passed, the sex of the offspring cannot be altered by a fluctuation in temperature. ☀️🌧❄️

Unfortunately, this majestic animal is facing extinction. It’s population has declined drastically falling from a record of 100,000 in 1990 to less than 10,000 today. Due to an increase in the construction of agricultural and livestock land they are losing their natural wilderness habitat. What’s further more concerning, is that the only threat faced by cheetahs is not habitat loss. Many are hunted for their meat, luxurious skin, and other body parts. Some are hit by nearby vehicles and many Cubs are illegally exported as pets. If you want to help this cause and prevent the extinction of cheetahs go to the link in my bio 👆🏻👆🏻👆🏻

The cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus) 🐆is known as the fastest mammal on land due to the fact that it can reach a speed of 70 miles per hour in a short period of time. Its slim long legs, blunt claws, strong muscles, small round head, and long neck enable it to be built for speed. However, this aerodynamic structure puts them at a disadvantage when it comes to protecting themselves against larger and more violent predators such lions or hyenas. 🐾🦁

Face to face with one of the most fierce creatures.🔥😍Do you ever wonder how a notorious predator such as the Cheetah stays hydrated in hot climates under harsh sunlight? 🌝One of the distinguishing features of this animal is it’s tear lines💧. There are two black lines that run from each tear duct down to its mouth. They help reflect the sun’s glare and allow them to hunt in direct sunlight without getting blinded😎. Due to water scarcity in their environment, they have also evolved to live off of one drink of water every 3-4 days. Stay tuned for more...🤗
