No dia 2 de dezembro de 1947, devido a um grande temporal no mar, ocorreu aquela que foi considerada a maior tragédia marítima na costa portuguesa na altura. Naufragaram ao largo de Matosinhos, 4 traineiras, causando a morte a 152 pescadores. Alguns cadáveres deram à costa e sobreviveram apenas 6 homens. A tragédia afetou centenas de lares de humildes pescadores deixando 71 viúvas e 152 órfãos.
