This project is a transmedia and collaborative interpretation of Xochimilco, in Mexico City, Mexico, which explores the embedded narratives, bringing together archives, poetry, music, imagery, organic materials, and rituals into a shared dialogue. As a borough and drying wetland in resistance, Rojas says, “Caught between pre-Hispanic cultural roots and the pressures of capitalist urbanization shaping Mexico City’s periphery, it reflects the complex tensions of this territory.”
Seen here is a selection of the images from the project by, photographed in Xochimilco, Mexico City, Mexico:
1. Javier del Valle, a fourth-generation chinampero and documentarist, rows to his family’s chinampa (an artificial island for agriculture) at dawn on 30 October 2023. Proud of his heritage, he embraces the significance of local festivities tied to the pre-Hispanic agricultural calendar and is a collaborator on the project.
2. A farmer waters his crops during the drought season on a chinampa on 14 December 2019. The natural springs have dried up due to historic overextraction, and now the canals are filled with treated — yet polluted — water, contaminated by the surrounding urban sprawl.
3. An abandoned cornfield is contaminated by jimsonweed at a chinampa on 4 December 2020. Due to lack of support and globalization, traditional cultivation in chinampas has slowly disappeared over generations.
4. People from Xochimilco lift a cross at the top of the Xochitepec hill during the traditional yearly Día de la Santa Cruz celebration, on 11 March 2022, which is associated with the arrival of the first rains and the beginning of the planting of corn.

Seen here, photos from the project ‘...here, there was a lake’, a collaborative site-specific documentation, combining different media—residents’ archives, poetry, music, and photography. The project addresses the complex tensions of Xochimilco, a drying wetland in resistance, caught between pre-Hispanic cultural roots and the capitalist urbanization of Mexico City.
1. Residents lift a cross atop Xochitepec Hill, in the borough of Xochimilco, during the traditional Día de la Santa Cruz celebration, on 11 March 2022. This event marks the arrival of the first rains and the start of the corn planting season, highlighting its deep agricultural roots and hopes for a successful harvest.
2. An abandoned cornfield is invaded by jimsonweed at a chinampa (a prehispanic floating plot of land made of mounds of mud), in Xochimilco, 4 December 2020. Chinampa’s traditional cultivation practices are slowly disappearing as agriculture lacks support in an urbanized landscape.
3. A child floats in the Tezhuilo lagoon, during the Holy Saturday celebration, in Xochimilco, on 19 April 2025. On this celebration, people often swim and play with water as a symbolic act of purification, whilst Mexico City stands on the edge of a deepening water crisis, resulting from long-lasting draining practices, accelerating climate change, and relentless urban sprawl.
4. A traditional boat used in Xochimilco burns during a protest against the construction of a highway over a wetland in the historic center of Mexico City, on 28 February 2021. The capitalist urbanization of Mexico City has put Xochimilco’s unique ecosystem at risk, and builds tensions between inhabitants and external interests.
