“Sorry for the terrible pun to open this post, but there’s no glossing over my absence for the past 160 days… so here goes.
In early May, my mental state nose-dived. An idling career did-in my sense of professional relevance and confidence, and my scale modelling work then fell victim to the same. Postal strikes and tariff wars decimated my side-hustle. A parent with cognitive decline, for whom I was the primary caregiver, became a source of constant concern and stress. Other family health issues were the same, including watching my partner navigate the benefits and challenges that came with AuDHD diagnosis. And, underpinning some of these shorter-term challenges were long-simmering mental tempests that finally escaped their cage.
Having always been a problem-solver, I always assumed I could manage whatever life threw my way, but by mid-May I finally realized I was in the shit, and had been for a while. A visit to my doctor returned a diagnosis, not surprisingly, of depression and anxiety.
The 5+ months since have been devoted to letting therapy and meds do what they can do, and fortunately, they’ve had a positive impact. I’m still wrestling with questions about who I am, how I’m neurologically-wired, and what to do with my life, hoping the answers will help rebuild my mental health on a more stable foundation, however, I’m in a much better place now to work through the process than I was earlier this year.
People come an go from social media all the time, and the point of this post isn’t to call attention to my absence, to trauma dump, or seek sympathy. This post is for anyone who’s going through something similar, and could use a reminder of my biggest takeaway from the past year — that denial of my deteriorating mental state did exponentially more harm, to myself and those around me, than depression itself has done. If you feel like you need help, please go get it.

In contrast to the plastic, the decals were excellent, settling right in with little more than a splash of Mr. Mark Setter. I'll give them a few days to dry, while start tackling all the add-ons.

After the 3 time round, the green was far too vivid as seen in the final photo. So I took a step back, spraying a 50% opacity application of Mr. Surfacer. Working with the wing first, I went straight to a subtle black ink layer, then resprayed the camo freehand following the barely visible pattern. With the wing looking good, the fuselage was finished in the same manner.
Finally ready for decals!

Okay, enough with the hard-sell. I had a bunch of questions about how I photographed some of my recent P-40 images, and this is it. A couple extra notes: I shoot in a tripod for these shots, although I can get a very similar shot with my iPhone; your camera settings settings may vary based on your set-up; I use white posterboard here, but other neutral colours could work.
As these are my bench lamps, I can set this up now in less than two minutes (not counting clearing space on my bench 😅), get a few shots, and be back working in no time. So give the technique a try and let me know how it works for you!
