Somehow, I live - and then we enter into the steepest climb of our day.
As we ascend, the trees fall away, the terrain turns to rock, and the air grows thin. Every five hundred feet or so we stop to breathe and we aren’t the only ones. Hikers from Italy, Austria, Germany, the US, Korea and Japan climb in unison — stopping and going and stopping and going. When we reach the summit, we all take turns taking pictures of one another. It is a fucking marvel up here, outer space moon times and getting here was impossibly difficult. I’m proud of all of us. All of our pictures look amazing, too.
After a celebratory rest, we metabolize that what goes up must come down. A peek over the edge of the mountain shows a loose scree filled descent of 1000 feet and over 100 switch backs. I pray to the KT tape gods to protect my knees, consider (and decide against) taking another buspirone to take the edge of the anxiety, and we start to mince our way down.
Rounding the bend, our trail goes steeply up and does not stop for many hours. We have an immediate 1500 feet of elevation gain, on rocky technical trail. There’s no air in this air! I say again and again. And it’s true! There isn’t!
Happy birthday to you, my babe. Can’t wait to have a hundred million more birthdays by your side, in this lifetime and the next and for many many after that. Thank you for making me remember that partnership is possible for me, that I can build a life with someone just so long as they are well suited.

Do you listen to songs on repeat? Will it be weird when we’re walking and I inevitably trip? I am always tripping. That’s something you don’t know about me yet, but I bet you could have guessed. Right now I have a bruise on my hip. I didn’t know where my body was in space, I hit the corner of my kitchen table. I always thought as I aged I would get softer, but the truth is I think I am getting more angular. My protrusions are a risk. Sometimes I would like to wrap myself in bubble wrap. I am too anemic to be so pointed.
We all have secrets, but I can’t recall any of mine that you don’t already know. The truth is, I don’t see much benefit to not saying what’s true. Because of this fact, I have grown to learn that I am too much for most, but I think not too much for you. It’s interesting to not be too much to the voice I hear in the dark that sometimes says I love you. I get confused. Are you sure? I say. Yeah, I’m sure, you respond.
Anything is possible.
