PART THREE: VENEZIA

The Most Serene Republic of Venice, year 1640.
Aurelio Della Torre di Rezzonico, a nobleman residing in the castle of Rezzonico and Baron of the Holy Roman Empire, took a bold step by establishing his family’s presence in the city.

Although the official purpose of this strategic relocation was to strengthen his family’s commercial endeavours, it was actually a calculated move in a larger scheme—a quest for power that the Rezzonico dynasty had successfully executed in various other cities. Their true ambitions went beyond mere trade. In 1687, after settling in Venice, Aurelio’s family was accepted into the Venetian patriciate, becoming full members of the Great Council and gaining access to the magistracies of the Republic.

Despite their vast economic influence in Venice, the Della Torre di Rezzonico family was never able to elect a doge from among its members due to their markedly international interests and anyway recent rise to Venetian nobility — the Venetian government was rightly very careful to defend its national identity.
Yet, their legacy reached new heights in 1758 when Carlo della Torre di Rezzonico, a Venetian, ascended to the papal throne as Clemens PP. XIII.

In Rome, Carlo Rezzonico Jr. (1724–1799), a nephew of Pope Clement XIII, became a Cardinal. His relative, Abbondio Rezzonico (1742–1810), who was also from Venice, was honored with a seat as a Senator.
The Della Torre family demonstrated a remarkable ability to wield power and navigate the changing tides of history.

Thank you for joining us on this ‘journey of discovery’ with our two protagonists, Erminia and Luca.

Also, here’s a valuable tip for your upcoming photoshoot on Lake Como and in Venice: Ensure you have a top-notch tour guide following us for part of the photoshoot. While I am a qualified, local photographer committed to excellence, I don’t claim to have the skills to replace other professionals!

PART TWO: REZZONICO

Como is regarded as the central city on Lake Como today. However, the rich history of our lake reveals a time when the area was fragmented into independent dominions that occasionally even clashed in conflict.
This fragmentation arose from the decline of the Roman military roads that once linked Lake Como to Rome and Germany. Following the fall of the Roman Empire, these routes fell into disrepair, making water travel essential.

Located in the northern part of Lake Como, Rezzonico appears as a quaint village today, but it was once a pivotal centre of power in the Italian peninsula.
A large castle, which is still inhabited, dominates the landscape of Rezzonico and occupies a substantial portion of it.
The Della Torre di Rezzonico dynasty, also known as the Torriani (both translate to ‘Of/From the Tower’), originated here and exerted considerable influence over much of northern Italy, particularly from the 12th century onward.

The Della Torre di Rezzonico family was accustomed to establishing branches in important Italian cities by seizing available opportunities.
For example, in the Middle Ages, they played a role in the foundation of Alessandria (my birthplace) during the time of Frederick Barbarossa, ruled over Milan, and in addition to Venice, they also started another branch in the historically rival Maritime Republic of Genoa.

It is the legacy of the Della Torre dynasties that forms the powerful link between Lake Como and Venice.
Following this, our fascinating journey begins in Rezzonico, where we explore the remnants of Roman dominion, understand its medieval heritage, and learn about its relationship to water.
Next, our third episode continues in Venice, where we will also marvel at Ca’ Rezzonico, the magnificent building along the Canal Grande which now houses the Museum of the 18th Century.

Special thanks to Antonio Calzolaro, former director of the G. H. Villa Serbelloni Bellagio, and his wife Maria Elena Della Torre for introducing me to the wonders of Rezzonico for the first time.

PROLOGUE: THE WEDDING DAY

Ciao, I’m pleased to share this introduction with you!
Get ready, because the upcoming two-part publication is something you won’t want to miss.

Set on their Big Day, this “trash-the-dress” episode at the reception stars Erminia and Luca, our dynamic and enthusiastic protagonists.

Their covenant was celebrated at Relais Villa Vittoria in Laglio, marking the beginning of our fairy tale journey: a double couple photoshoot to explore the connection between the waters of Lake Como and Venice.

For centuries, the western land borders of the Venetian Empire were established just a stone’s throw away from Lake Como. The Venetian dominion extended as far as Vercurago, near the Lecco branch of Lario (the name of Lake Como).

However, the link between Lake Como and Venice is not based on geographical proximity, but rather arises from the politics of the influential Italian Della Torre di Rezzonico dynasty.

The exploration of the often misunderstood relationship between Lake Como and Venice, the two places where I live and work as a specialized photographer, is one of my favorite themes for couples’ and family photoshoots.

Join us on this treasure hunt!

#VENICE AND THE ART OF TURNING AROUND THE CORNER

Venice’s diversification can exceed expectations, with such a variety of opportunities that make it a wide place despite not fitting the modern idea of a big city.

The celebrated San Marco is often overcrowded, but a few small, quiet spots exist for fine shots.
Other districts are also rich in history and less affected by mass tourism.

My routes are well-tested, sometimes with amateur photographer tour guides, to find ‘secret’ spots.

I define my method to always have places free from other people as ‘The Art of Turning Around the Corner’.
It’s my speciality, not a figurative concept but a tangible reality. Imagine walking through a bustling area crowded with tourists, and then, suddenly, turning around the corner to reach a place where we find ourselves in a dreamy, photographic set.
In addition, a secure link on my website will provide you with a complete guide for a perfect photoshoot.

#LAKECOMO: AN AESTHETIC, MINDFUL EXPLORATION OF OUR CULTURE AND HERITAGE
Everything planned for the best experience.

History here begins with the traces of the Celts and Romans, and continues through stunning beauty, rich culture, and traditions to the present day.

Itineraries for a comprehensive and engaging exploration of the area are awaiting you.

These include not only our beautiful, well-known villas and their gardens, but also lesser-known, iconic hidden gems, old villages without commercial brand shops, and the opportunity to enjoy breathtaking natural scenery while taking our photoshoot.

The ‘Full-Day Photoshoot’ offers the chance to explore hidden mountain regions with picturesque villages, breathtaking ‘aerial’ views, and ancient ruins that are distinct from those close to the lakeshore.
Investment details for both options can be found on my main website linked in the biography.

The Art of Narrative Photography

The idea behind ‘narrative photography’ is that a series of photographs can be used not only for aesthetic and visual description but also to tell a story.
Narrative photography is ‘the art of weaving stories with images’.

In other words, it’s not just about capturing a beautiful image but rather about taking the viewer on a journey. A journey through photographs that convey an emotional and thought-provoking message, evoke emotions, and engage the viewer on a deeper level.

A sequence of photos that tells a story has the power to transport the viewer to a specific time and place, evoke a wider range of emotions and leave a lasting impression.
