Es war meine erste Begegnung mit diesen wunderbaren Wesen. Weit über der
Baumgrenze stapfte ich durch den Schnee der Schweizer Alpen entlang eines schroffen, steilen Hanges. Etwa 30 Meter unter uns saß er dann: der Alpenschneehase. Im Eingang
einer kleinen Felshöhle, etwas geschützt vor Wind und Schneewehen.
Ich beobachtete ihn lange, wie er dort fast regungslos saß, kaum sichtbar mit seinem
weißen Fell, in die Ferne über die Gipfel der Berge schauend.
Mit einer längeren Belichtung und gezielten Kamerabewegungen versuchte ich, das Verschmelzen des Schneehasen mit seiner Umgebung einzufangen. So konnte ich trotz der Nähe durch das Teleobjektiv seine beinahe unsichtbare Präsenz bewahren, während
die feinen, wie gezeichneten Schlieren im Bild das Treiben der Schneewehen über die karge Landschaft betonen.
Ist es nicht erstaunlich und wunderschön, dass dieser zarte, fellige Hase sich monatelang zwischen knorrigen Felsen, Eis und Schnee wohlfühlt? Dieser Gedanke ging mir durch den Kopf, während ich ihn beobachtete, leicht zitternd vor Kälte trotz all der Jacken.
Das Fell des Schneehasen wechselt von Braun im Sommer zu Weiß im Winter und tarnt ihn so das ganze Jahr über perfekt – eigentlich. Denn dieser Rhythmus gerät durch den Klimawandel aus dem Takt. Es kommt immer häufiger zum sogenannten „Colour-Mismatch“: Während die Schneehasen ihr weißes Fell anlegen, bleibt der Schnee immer häufiger aus. Sie sitzen dann als helle, weiße Farbtupfer auf dem braunen Erdboden und sind so eine leichte Beute.
Es freut mich, das dieses unauffällige Foto einer so leisen Tierart Aufmerksamkeit bekommt. Im Hinblick auf die großen Herausforderungen, denen der Schneehase sich stellen muss, ist Aufklärung und Forschung zu diesen tollen Tieren besonders wichtig.

Although the waterfall itself couldn't be included in the frame from this perspective, it inspired me to spend hours experimenting late into the night with long exposures.
In a single shot, I tried to capture the goose as sharply as possible at the start of the exposure, while moving the camera at the end to create wave-like, waterfall-inspired streaks from the brightly lit weir.” - Luca Lorenz

For months, I had been observing a single individual at this lake. There is something special about seeing the same bird repeatedly and getting to know all its unique behaviours.
Over time, I knew the exact time this female kingfisher would return in the morning from its sleeping spot at another lake to fish in this little pond.
One morning, while I was sitting in my camouflage tent in shallow water, the kingfisher landed unexpectedly just about 50cm behind me in the reeds and spent several minutes fishing, completely unaware of my presence.
I noticed her beautiful reflection on the water, surrounded by the sun's sparkling reflections, and photographed the scene with a vintage 50mm lens.” - Luca Lorenz

💙 Luca was photographing mute swans on an urban lake one evening when a coypu, a rodent introduced from South America, appeared in the frame.
💙 When the heavens opened, Luca was out with his camera. He minimised the lens aperture to ensure the full expanse of the sea was in focus and framed an inquisitive harbour seal enjoying the patter of the rain.
💙 Luca was lying flat on the dewy grass for a better perspective of one of the park’s ubiquitous blackbirds when four deer emerged from the mist and stopped to assess the situation. Time stood still and he caught the moment.
💙 Luca arrived early as dawn broke, ensuring he didn’t miss the first rays of sunlight on the water. He heard the red-throated divers before he saw them.
💙 Luca had been watching a tree hole where this Eurasian pygmy owl and its mate were nesting. When one disappeared, the other continued feeding the chicks. On this day, the remaining bird returned clutching the chicks’ breakfast in its claws, and called for its mate, but there was no reply.

Silent Despair – not only from the mouse’s perspective.
For many days, I observed a tree hollow deep in a German forest where a pair of pygmy owls were raising their young. One of my absolute favourite birds! One day, the female disappeared—most likely taken by a tawny owl or a hawk.
The male did his best to care for the young alone — and he did very well.
About a week later, the fledglings were finally old enough to jump out of the hollow. Still unable to fly, they quickly climbed up the small trees after the jump.
The next morning, after their first night outside, only the adult male was left. He was holding a mouse in his claws, calling softly again and again for many minutes. The prey was meant for his young, but no one ever answered.
When I took this photo, I felt as if I could see the desperation in his searching eyes.
The fledglings never returned.

At 2,300 meters, the heavy wind whipped the snow into a swirling chaos. And the choughs right in the middle of it. I loved watching them as they flew and hopped through the blizzard in a truly elegant way.
