Spring is in full bloom at!

Tomorrow, May 1, marks the official start of the summer planting season… and while we can’t wait for the bountiful summer harvests to come, we’re happy to sit back and enjoy the view for just a little while longer 💐

Celebrating Earth Day with a big harvest is rad(ish) 🫜

Today and every day, we’re grateful for the pink lady slippers, French breakfasts, Easter eggs, Daikons, and all other radishes that spring gardens have to offer!

So, you’ve seeded all your spring crops… if you thought you were done, think again! Once your seedlings are tall enough to grasp, you’ll need to remove some of them (aka “thin”) to make sure the rest have enough room to grow. Thinning your seedlings is especially important with root crops like radishes, turnips, beets, and carrots, because they need plenty of underground space to grow a healthy root. If you neglect to thin them, the seedlings will compete with each other and they’ll all struggle for nutrients and space.

The amount you’ll need to thin will depend on which crop you are growing, how well the seeds germinated, and how heavily you seeded it. In this video, Josie thins her radish rows to 1” per plant. Carrots need roughly 1-2”, beets need 3”, and most lettuces and other leafy greens need about 1”.

Bonus - you can eat the seedlings you remove as microgreens! They make a delicious (and highly nutritious) addition to any meal, or a great mid-garden snack 🌱

Seeding takes some TLC: tender love and carrots! 🥕 Now is a great time of year to seed your carrots. They’re a slower-growing crop, so the carrots we seed this week will be ready to harvest in June. We recommend planting in successions to have a steady supply all summer long 🧑‍🌾

It’s as easy as 1, 2, pea! 🫛 Early spring is a great time to get your peas in the ground. Plant them 1 inch apart, in a furrow 3-4 inches deep along a trellis and water them in. After they sprout, thin to 3 inches apart and watch them climb 🪜

Sugar snap, snow, or English — whichever variety you choose, plant them ASAP and enjoy your harvest in a few months!

May we peas have your attention??🫛🫛🫛

Early to mid spring is the best time of year to plant your peas, so that you can enjoy a bountiful harvest in May and June! Keep an eye on them as they sprout and reseed as necessary to ensure full germination- they’re a favorite snack for squirrels at this stage.

Peas fix atmospheric nitrogen into the soil, transforming this essential nutrient into a usable form for other plants. This makes peas a great choice to plant on a trellis before summer cucumbers, which consume lots of nitrogen. They’re also self-regulating, meaning that they’ll produce only as many fruits as they need (and will stop producing once there are enough on the vine). Continuous harvesting tells the plant that it needs to produce more fruits, giving you even more peas to enjoy!

Not sure where to start? Check out the link in our bio to watch a video guiding you through all you need to sow peas (Hint: you will need peas and a trellis)
