I love the original Minton tiles, curvy banister, sash windows, cornices and old fireplace we have here. Not all of the original period features were still in the house when we bought it, but I’m grateful for the ones that survived.
Sometimes I think about all of the hands that have touched the banister over its 163 years. I really need to do some research and find out about the people who lived here years ago.

I always think the year starts off early and picks up pace. May seems to be flying by!
Although it’s been very cold, there has been some bright, sunny spells. The clematis and alliums in the garden are lovely at the moment and I’ve loved seeing all the pretty wild garlic on our dog walks.
We had an afternoon in Manchester and ate some very nice food.
We had a pair of ducks visited our tiny garden pond. It made my day! I hope they return! 🤞🏻 🦆
No exciting plans here for the weekend. I might get my little collection of vintage plates up.

May is such a gorgeous month. I love seeing spring flowers and everything looking so fresh and green.
Our old house is filled with gorgeous sunlight again and the evening sunshine pouring through the sash windows in our north-facing rooms is something I miss in the winter months.
I’m trying to keep my phone in my pocket on my dog walks and keeping my eyes open for signs of spring instead. 🌸

The Instagram version of this old house looks very different to the real-life version with trainers discarded on the Minton tiles, chewed dog blankets on the sofa and probably some tins of paint that I haven’t got round to returning to the cellar. There always seems to be a pile of life admin on the kitchen island and a basket of laundry to put away, but they are just signs that we live here.
I’ve heard some negativity recently about accounts who only share the perfect-looking stuff. It made me wonder if I should share more real life, but I don’t think that’s my place here. There are some brilliant accounts that share that kind of relatable content, so I’ll leave that to them. Just know, my house definitely does not look like no one lives with it…unless I know we are expecting visitors and I do a frenzied tidy up! 🤣

I realised I haven’t shared any photos of the kitchen since I tackled the big repaint, so here they are. Also, some bonus photos of the kitchen as it was when we moved in - with the fridge in front of the door as it was the only place it could go!
I love the view through to the hallway and how the new kitchen colours tie in with the old Minton tiles and the warmer feel of the space.
I’ve been thinking about getting blinds and plaster cornice in here for 8 years, so maybe I might get round to that at some point! Nothing happens quickly here! 🐌

The month seems to have flown by. I’ve had a birthday, finished the kitchen makeover, wallpapered the office, eaten a giant pizza, had my first Aperol of 2026 and my camera roll is full of photos of my favourite spring flowers. Life feels so much more colourful at this time of year!
I’m hoping for a quieter May to get recharged a bit before starting any new projects. I have a very long snagging list to keep me occupied!

It started life as a strange upstairs kitchen but we decided to use it as an office. It is north-facing, so it only gets a tiny bit of direct light on summer evenings. The rest of the year, it’s pretty dark. I tried lightening it up, but it still didn’t feel right. I needed to embrace the darkness and bring in more warmth and character.
The new LVT flooring is Chargot Oak from the Signature Collection. I love the traditional look of it, and it’s brought so much character to the room.
I went bold with the colour in here. I bought the paint from. It’s a Valspar colour called Uluru Sunset. I used dead flat matt on the walls and eggshell on the woodwork. However, I think the eggshell might look a bit shiny, so I might paint it in the matt finish when I get the chance.
The finishing touch has been wallpaper. I’ve added this beautiful design, which has added interest and softness to the room. It’s called Sibylla and is pretty, but not too over-the-top flowery.
Now if feels like this room flows with the style and colours in the rest of the house. I keep having a peep through the door, and I’m really pleased with how it looks now.

I was very glad to get this done and I do love how it turned out. Just need some carpet on those landings at some point as the floorboards are very gappy. Maybe later this year…🤞🏻
It’s always a good feeling when you finish things but I also think sometimes you shouldn’t keep going when the ‘Renovation Fatigue’ hits. When we were in the thick of the renovations, we had some breaks. It can feel relentless when you’re coordinating trades and spending every weekend moving furniture, prepping and painting. It’s good to have spells where you’re not embarking on a new project and to let the dust settle (literally!) before making a new round of decisions. Yes, keep going towards the final goal but also know when you need a little break too. It’s all about balance!💪🏻 😴

We have lived in this old house for nearly 8 years now and the memories of the house before and during the renovations are starting to fade a bit so it’s good to have a reminder in case I’m tempted to start browsing Rightmove for projects again! 🤣

Once we moved in here, I really wondered what we’d done as the size of the job ahead became very clear. 🙈 🏡
It’s not been a quick renovation. We’ve saved up to do things room by room and still haven’t finished the house but I think the next year should see a few more things ticked off the list.
There’s a saying that “What’s meant for you will never pass you by” and I think that we were meant to bring this old, Victorian house back to life. ✨
