Logging was booming in the 1950s when the Baikie brothers built a lumber mill here. Successive owners completed the site’s industrial transformation. The heavy industrial use took a toll on the estuary and the salmon who travelled this river to spawn. The days of the lumber mill came to an end in 1998. The property was bought by the Nature Conservancy of Canada in 2000 and gifted to the City of Campbell River in 2001. During the following years, comprehensive planning was done, and extensive restoration work was undertaken to return this important part of the Campbell River estuary back to a natural setting.
Since the Baikie Island Nature Reserve’s opening on September 30, 2012, many nature lovers walk the trails and enjoy the diversity of plants and wildlife that now exist here.
