The influence of the Jamaican legend on urban culture in New York and the world can be summarized in three fundamental pillars:
The Foundational Connection (Toasting): Hip hop was born in the Bronx in the 1970s thanks to Jamaican immigrants like DJ Kool Herc. Marley's style and the culture of the Sound Systems in Jamaica brought with them toasting (speaking or rapping over a beat), which directly evolved into the art of MCing (rapping).
Sampling and Iconic Anthems: Virtually every era of hip hop has sampled or paid homage to Marley. Legends like Public Enemy, Notorious B.I.G., Tupac Shakur, Snoop Dogg, and Jay-Z have used his rhythms and voice to amplify the power of their lyrics. The collaborative album Distant Relatives (2010) between his son Damian Marley and rapper Nas is the ultimate proof of this perfect fusion.
The Voice of Social Resistance: Marley imbued music with a political purpose, denouncing systemic oppression and police brutality (the Babylon concept). Conscious hip hop groups like KRS-One and Common directly adopted this mentality of using the microphone as a weapon of protest and education for the streets.
