Candela is a new composition for alto saxophone solo written in 2020 by Lorenzo Simoni, musician from Italy; the main inspiration behind this work are the movements of the candle’s flame: unpredictable but constant without interruptions.

Klonos was originally composed in 1993 as a commission for the Tromp music competition, this was the first time that Swerts actually wrote for saxophone, his main inspiration for the piece was the idea of a free jazz saxophone player.⠀

La scorsa domenica si festeggiava il compleanno del compositore belga ed ecco dunque la mia interpretazione di una delle sue opere più famose che oramai ho in repertorio da diversi anni.⠀
“Klonos” viene pubblicato nel 1993 su commissione del concorso internazionale “Tromp music competition”, si tratta della prima volta che Piet Swerts scrive per sassofono: la sua ispirazione principale fu l’immagine di un sassofonista di free-jazz.⠀

I always loved playing solo saxophone: whether it was an occasion to meditate, pray, discuss, explore with the instrument or simply because that gig was not paying enough for other musicians to come 🥲
Anyway, this skill pays off really well when I'm asked to play classical recitals in solo saxophone for an hour or so (and maybe even outside without any reverb). In those occasions I usually play some Bach, Paganini or contemporary music for half an our or so and then improvise over some songs.
Questa settimana si celebra la nascita di Adolphe Sax (nato a Dinant, in Belgio, il 6 novembre 1814), costruttore di strumenti nonché inventore del saxofono.
Ho sempre amato suonare in sax solo: che si trattasse di un'occasione per meditare, pregare, discutere, esplorare insieme allo strumento o semplicemente perché un concerto non pagava abbastanza per avete altri musicisti 🥲
Comunque sia, quest’abilità ripaga molto quando mi viene chiesto di fare concerti di classica interamente in sassofono solo per un'ora e magari all’aperto.
In quelle occasioni di solito suono Bach, Paganini o musica contemporanea per circa mezz’ora e poi improvviso su alcuni brani della tradizione.
