After 10 days up north, I was reaching for mine on those chilly 10° mornings, turns out temperature really is relative when you’re used to 27°!
That’s exactly how this wonderful group ended up in my two day quilt coat class at travelling from all over QLD with quilts ready to cut up and turn into something bold and beautiful.
And wow, did they deliver. So many stunning finishes and very happy makers. I hope your coats keep you warm, spark conversations and carry your stories out into the world. I loved our time together and getting to know each of you after our zoom introduction.
Huge thanks to Lisa, Abbie and Beau for such a warm welcome, it’s clear how much heart you’ve built into your Springwood community. Ultra responsive to your customers needs and anticipating each little whim. I’ll be back 🤗
Now I’m home, back to routine… and back to the gym so I can keep hauling suitcases for the next adventure 💪

I’m too busy teaching people how to sew fun and useful things to chase every new trend, but I’ll keep sharing anyway.
Here are some progress shots from today’s quilt coat class ✂️
We started with 8 quilts and by the end of the day we were well on the way to finished garments. Plenty of hand holding and gentle encouragement to keep everyone on track 💛
Today’s MVP was the bias tape maker - a little champion, churning through metres of double fold bias binding without a hiccup.
I also gave myself an extra challenge and baked scones in my serviced apartment, because apparently I enjoy making life harder 😆 Pumpkin & feta scones plus regular sweet scones, made in a dodgy oven but still delicious. Go me 🙌
Now it’s time to rest up before the final push tomorrow. I can’t wait to see everything finished - and to see all those proud faces. It’s always so rewarding watching students make something they’re genuinely proud of 🤍

Another lesson in colour and value. And how the same block can be pieced in different ways. So if you don’t have your machine you can hand piece it. Or if those sharp points are eluding you, we can always rely on good ol’ foundation paper piecing #fppforthewin 🙌
We were treated to some delicious home baking. Thank you to the bakers 🤗
At the end of the day we admired Jenny’s gorgeous quilt that she will be cutting up tomorrow for this weekend’s quilt coat workshop. So exciting!
Stay tuned for more folks!
✂️✂️✂️
Not only have I convinced Lisa to hand sew her binding, but I also had the pleasure of teaching her how to English paper piece curves. What an honour 🥰
Well done to all the other students in today’s Opal Essence Mini workshop - you learned some great tips to tackle pretty much any EPP pattern you come across.
Tomorrow will be a busy day with a full class sewing Kaleidoscope Kisses. Saturday & Sunday it’s Quilt Coats. Can’t wait to see everyone’s fabrics 🤗
And look what I get to admire on the wall for the next few days 💝
Hey shop owners, students, and friends - have you seen this quilt coat?
👀🔍🧥
I was packing for my current teaching trip and realized it’s completely missing. I have a vague feeling I might have handed it off at AQC to promote an upcoming class… but I honestly can’t remember.
So I’m putting it out there Aussie students, shops, friends - has anyone seen my Oscilatey Coat class sample?
👀🔍🧥

Head to GOMA w/ and see the extraordinary exhibition by Icelandic-Danish artist Olafur Eliasson. A feast for the senses. Thanks Cat, what a great idea 🥰
I’ve been hand stitching some of these little Opal Essence Mini blocks whilst on the road teaching in Queensland. It’s a tidy, self-contained project: just a few solids, small scissors, needle, thread and a glue stick. (You could thread baste, but I find that too fiddly with curved/flat back EPP)
What I really want to talk about here is VALUE.
🖤🩶🤍
Value is simply how light or dark a fabric reads and it matters far more than colour when you’re working with optical illusions or secondary patterns.
Swipe to have a look at the second photo (in black and white)
Notice how the design suddenly becomes clearer? That’s value doing the heavy lifting.
Dark values recede, light values come forward and the contrast is what creates the illusion of depth and movement.
Most of my quilts rely on this more than colour.
If your quilt ever feels a bit flat or the pattern isn’t “reading” it’s almost always a value issue.
In my classes, I get students to use their phone camera on a b&w filter to sort fabrics into light, medium and dark.
🖤🩶🤍
It’s the quickest way to see what’s really going on.
Have you tried it?
PS if you’re in SE Qld, I believe there many be a few spots left in this class on Thursday. The Quilt Coat & Kaleidoscope Kisses workshops may have sold out. Contact Lisa directly for an update or book online ✨

We’ll travel from Marrakech through the Atlas Mountains and the Sahara 🐫 then on to Fes, Chefchaouen 💙🩵 and Rabat - exploring Amazigh (Berber) craft traditions at a grassroots level. Along the way, women’s cooperatives will share their beautiful textile work, blending age old techniques with thoughtful contemporary innovation 🧵💛
The trip includes hands on sessions and demonstrations with local artisans. In the mountains and desert we’ll learn traditional Moroccan embroidery, tie knots for rug making, experiment with eco dyeing using rose madder, and more 🎨🧶
As guest artist, I’ve created a special project to build a personal textile souvenir of our journey. It’s designed to spark ideas for your own textile design, drawing inspiration from Morocco’s breathtaking landscapes, colours and architecture 🕌✨ It’s not an intensive workshop, there’s simply too much to see, but we’ll set aside time to stitch, experiment, gather treasures and build a visual diary as we travel 📔✨
Bookings are now open on the Amazigh Cultural Tours website. These experiences fill quickly, so don’t wait too long if you’re dreaming of Morocco 🌙✨
