And that day, the faith of the Catholic Church moved through every corner of the square with emotion and euphoria, including among those of us there working to bring those historic images to the world.
Since then, I have had the privilege of watching Pope Leo grow into his role. A shy, quiet, introverted religious man who suddenly became the most visible presence of the Church. He had to step out of that private space and move toward his people.
His first appearances were guided by those who understood the weight of the office and the memory of his predecessors. He followed instructions carefully: where to walk, how to sit, what to do in certain moments. All of this unfolded during a Jubilee Year, with nonstop activity at the Vatican and thousands of pilgrims arriving every day.
But the smile was always there. That half smile we now recognize so easily, while his observant gaze scans the crowd, recognizing faces, flags, prayers and even tears.
I will always remember his laugh when I gave him the White Sox sandals and socks during his first apostolic trip to Turkey and Lebanon in 2025. But before handing him the gift, I put on my Yankees cap, and he could not help but laugh. I like to think he wears my gift on Tuesdays when he rests in Castel Gandolfo.
It has been deeply rewarding to watch him grow through my lens during this first year of his papacy.
Little by little, Pope Leo has been finding his voice within his papacy, patiently and wisely. Without rushing. Without being distracted by provocations. He is making his place in the history of humanity during these complicated, technological, globalized and fast-moving times.
Pope Leo, as I wish you a happy first year, I hope the road ahead continues to be filled with faith, patience, wisdom… and a lot of baseball!!

El regalo tuvo su propia logística. Mi compañero en Washington, Kendall, se encargó de recibirlo y traerlo en su último viaje a Roma. Así fue como, desde el Jubileo de los Influencers hace 4 meses, unas pantuflas y unas medias de los White Sox esperaron pacientemente hasta hoy para llegar a manos del Papa León XIV.
Igual quise hacer el momento más memorable. Antes de entregarle el regalo, me puse mi gorra de los, lo que provocó una pequeña carcajada y un instante de humanidad, calidez, béisbol y ánimo en la víspera de su primer viaje apostólico. Yo, por mi parte, agradecida por la oportunidad de ser parte de este momento histórico.
Y así fue: conocí al Papa León XIV en persona, estreché su mano y nos reímos un poco. Como le escribí en la carta que le dejé: “Me emociona profundamente lo que veo en mi futuro cubriendo su papado, y espero siempre tener la claridad, la ética y la sabiduría necesarias para presentar mi trabajo con la responsabilidad que merece.”
Y en una nota venezolana: Me acuesto hoy satisfecha por el día vivido sabiendo que aunque él sea fan de los Chicago White Sox, al menos no es Magallanero. Ruge, León, que somos Caraquistas.
A través de mi lente aprendí a leer sus gestos, su estado de ánimo, e incluso a intuir cómo se sentía físicamente. Vi su cercanía con el pueblo, su rechazo a los privilegios, su preferencia por unos zapatos negros gastados en lugar de los tradicionales zapatos rojos. Para él, el papado era un servicio, no un trono.
Lo vi cumplir con sus compromisos incluso enfermo. Los viajes apostólicos son agotadores, y mientras el resto del equipo descansaba al regresar, él ya estaba al día siguiente trabajando en el Vaticano. Me pregunté muchas veces de dónde sacaba esa energía. Se aferró a esa fuerza hasta el final.
Era feliz con niños y jóvenes. Rompía protocolos para dejarlos subir al altar con él. Les daba caramelos, abrazos, bendiciones. Sabía que en ellos estaba el futuro de la Iglesia.
Nunca lo vi sin silla de ruedas, pero colegas que sí lo hicieron me contaron que era imparable: caminaba y rompía el protocolo para acercarse a la gente. Y aun en silla de ruedas, lo seguía haciendo. Le gustaba estar cerca, aunque su salud estuviera comprometida.
Lo vi mantenerse firme bajo la lluvia, el viento y el sol inclemente. Siempre presente. En su última Audiencia General, apenas podía hablar, pero aún tenía la esperanza de leer su catequesis la semana siguiente. Ese momento no llegó.
Hoy desperté con la noticia de su muerte y el corazón se me encogió. Aunque su relación con Latinoamérica no siempre fue sencilla, lo vi trabajar incansablemente por mejorar la Iglesia. Lo vi dar voz a quienes no la tenían. Vi su lucha por un cambio positivo, hasta el final.
