“Those of you who follow me regularly will probably know a little bit of my story already.
Six years ago my home was entirely beige and to be honest a bit bland. But I didn’t even really notice that it maybe needed some love or attention.
Then in 2020, just before the Covid pandemic hit, I was diagnosed with stage 3 bowel cancer. The following 18 months involved surgeries, chemotherapy, shielding at home and all the fear and isolation and mental trauma that cones with a cancer diagnosis.
What followed genuinely changed my life.
I found this incredibly warm, inspiring and supportive community and slowly gained the confidence to completely transform our dark converted servants’ quarters into the colourful home it is now.
Starting this account undoubtedly helped carry me through my recovery and completely changed my outlook on life. Thankfully I’m now entirely cancer free and have gained a whole new community of friends along the way. I would never have believed that this corner of social media could be such a positive experience.”

The Mingle Breakfast! ✨
As a key part of the Mingle and Home partnership with the I was able to invite a small group of Minglers along to this special breakfast event, which is honestly such a lovely opportunity to start off our visit to the Ideal Home Show this weekend! And then we get to enjoy the whole show for the rest of the day!
But please don’t worry if you weren’t invited to the breakfast itself — Numbers were very limited and there are now so many folk following the Mingle Page and attending and supporting the Mingles that it was impossible to ask you all!

Because our home is converted Victorian servants’ quarters, it’s naturally quite dark, so the beige and neutral colour scheme we inherited really didn’t work — especially in the upstairs hall.
So this reel shows the “before”… and some of the colourful “afters”.
Honestly, the transformation of our whole home started simply with paint. Then gradually layering in art, flowers, plants, lighting and colourful accessories to bring warmth, personality and character into the space.
The walls in the hall are painted in Green Smoke, with the doors and woodwork in Downpipe — both Farrow & Ball colours, but colour matched by. I mainly chose this because I needed something much more durable, scrubbable and washable for real life… and the colour match is excellent.
Now let’s be honest — I will never stop faffing with the art, flowers and accessories. That’s half the fun when you’re a bit interiors obsessed.
But if you want to completely change the feel of your home without spending a fortune… start with paint. Honestly, the difference colour can make is incredible.
And colour matching? It really can work beautifully.

I’ve been a bit quiet on here lately. Between organising the next events and researching features for, this “retired” life is somehow busier than ever.
The definitely isn’t at its tidiest right now, but this morning’s sunshine on the Hague Blue walls was too good not to share. Honestly, dark walls are the perfect backdrop for colour, texture and personality.

For our anniversary holiday as you may have seen - we went back to Vienna where 25 and a half years ago we got engaged!
Truth be told neither of us remembered too much of that trip! I think a bit too much vino may have been consumed. So back we went and what a gorgeous city!! I have made this reel for us so we remember all the places we visited!! The memory is not quite as sharp these days. But this should preserve those memories for us!
The highlights were as follows - our anniversary roof top lunch lunch, visiting the, apple strudel and cocktails, tappelspitz, weiner schnitzel and sacher torte, open air classical music. Lovely lunch in the museum quarter
The fantastic wine festival and superb cocktails with tremendous light up beer mats. Mr LDH declared these the best cocktails he had ever drank!
Honestly we had the best time!
We also had an afternoon in Bratislava but that's still to come.

But everything was closed during that first year. I desperately needed something to distract myself.
Because I couldn’t really leave the house, that distraction became my home. I started upcycling furniture, styling shelves and surfaces and very nervously started my little Instagram account — despite having absolutely no clue what I was doing!
What followed genuinely changed my life.
I found this incredibly warm, inspiring and supportive community and slowly gained the confidence to completely transform our dark converted servants’ quarters into the colourful home it is now.
Starting this account undoubtedly helped carry me through my recovery and completely changed my outlook on life. Thankfully I’m now entirely cancer free and have gained a whole new community of friends along the way. I would never have believed that this corner of social media could be such a positive experience.
A few years ago I was encouraged to enter these awards but simply didn’t have the confidence to put myself forward. Recently though, I listened to a podcast about “the year of saying yes” — saying yes to opportunities that take you out of your comfort zone. And here I am!
So if my colourful home or my story has ever helped you choose a colour, or paint a ceiling or simply made you smile, I would genuinely love your vote ❤️ But more than anything I am absolutely delighted to be living my best life and taking part in these awards. The 8th of April 2020 was the day it actually hit me that I had cancer and how scary and serious it was. They didn't know the growth was cancer let alone stage 3 when they operated in February. I woke up with a stoma and was just exhausted on discharge. The world then shut down for COVID and I was told I had weeks cancer later over the phone. It didn't seem real. I couldn't see anyone to talk about it. But when I had to go to hospital on my own on 8th April. It felt so real. I was honestly terrified. And my poor husband had to stay outside.
So this is a big day for me. The me 6 years ago would never believe how well I would recover. Physically and mentally. The me 6 years ago was a bit broken.
So I make no apologies for telling you all to check your poo. To go to the Dr! To get things checked. Its bowel cancer awareness month and I wish I had been that bit more aware. But cancer caught early can be treated.
So check everything! Do the tests! But most importantly live your life! Make those changes. Follow the dreams! Take up hobbies! Tell folk you love them! Say yes to the offers and opportunities. Paint your ceiling red! Just go for it! Don't wait until you are ill! Do it now!
And thank you to all of you - friends- family- followers-especially my own Geoff, Katie and Conor - but all of you. For all your support and friendship and encouragement. The whole experience has absolutely changed my life! And despite everything its been for the better. The me of 6 years ago would never have believed that!! We have our Silver Wedding anniversary this year and my 60th birthday too. I am looking forward to it all. This is my year of saying Yes!

I think I have just about recovered from The Glasgow Mingle on Saturday!
What a great day - an incredibly great day - but goodness I was tired on Sunday and of course I now have a stinker of a cold. But thats fine. Sometimes I think thats my systems way of telling me to take a breather- and maybe just relax. So that's what I am doing!
So today has been about chilling out on the sofa in my Hague Blue Living Room. The first rays of spring sunshine are starting to hit the house in the mornings now which is lovely. So I thought I would share some photos and stills of my favourite room! And also a wee video sweep of it too.
Of course the house does not look like this just now. There are bundles of Mingle things - signs, badges, leaflets everywhere! It's actually a bit of a mess. But it will all get sorted soon enough.
And then some new painting will begin! The dining kitchen white ceiling is going to get the treatment at long last - and the windows and the door. At long last that white ceiling and door are going - in April. The countdown has begun!
But for tonight it's cold and flu capsules and binge watching The Other Bennet Sister which I am rather enjoying! Other Binge watching suggestions welcome too! Hope you had a good day x
Spring is definitely in the air!
My Dining kitchen is full of Daffodils and Tulips and I am loving it!
Some things to point out!
1. You might remember I ran a wee poll on stories last weekend about a mid century retro Norwegian pitcher jug actually called "ANNEMARIE "
Well you all voted for me go buy it!
So I did - from a fabulous shop full of mid century loveliness but also vintage clothes and vinyls Thank you Jill - I love my ANNEMARIE jug!
2. I have styled it alongside another Glasgow Brick vase from. These vases are the perfect size for tulips and daffodils! I have 2 of them! And they come in a fabulous range of colours! Mine are yellow and traditional brick coloured!
3. Obviously I have a candle burning. Being honest I always do!
I am genuinely addicted to the Black Plum and Rhubarb scent. And the lovely Hazel of is a goody bag sponsor for my events and she will have a stall at the March Mingle too! So I have promised to buy other scents too!
4. Lastly I really needed some stripes in my dining kitchen- so I saw this cracking table runner yesterday in the range in. It's the collab range with Sandersons. Isn't it perfect! I have to say it's Grace who has really made me see that my home really needs more stripes! Previously my only stripes were on my fab cushion from. ( it's alongside my embroidered cushion from ) So it's official- I am definitely on the look out for more stripey additions- I don't know where for or what yet but I will keep you posted! Happy to receive stripey inspiration!
This promises to be a super busy month with my first event of the year at the end of this month. But I will always have time for flowers, cushions and candles - oh and stripes too!!
