Last year I was contacted by The Passenger, an Italian magazine focusing on culture, photography, and reportage all around the world. Each issue is about one place, and I was asked to provide all of the photos for their Tokyo issue which was released in November last year.

All of the articles in the issue had interesting perspectives on Tokyo, but my favorite one was about Keirin, which is professional bicycle racing and one of the only forms of gambling legal in Japan. I spend a day at the Seibuen Velodrome in Saitama shooting the races with a telephoto lens from the stands.

In general, this was a very cool project that I got to work on! I was able to use some images from my archive but also have to shoot a lot of fresh material. It was a great foray into reportage/documentary for me, but my urban and street photography is heavily featured in the magazine as well. I guess over the years I’ve accumulated images that are relevant to many aspects of Tokyo.

Here are some of my favorite photos that were featured in the magazine!

Last summer I was contacted by MGM Grand to license a few Tokyo images for their reimagining of the Morimoto Restaurant in the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. (Who used to watch Iron Chef?). This was totally out of the blue… but now five of my photos are on display above the sushi bar. And they are huge!

This is not a PR plug or anything, I'm just proud of this one! I’ve been wanting to share this for a while and kept forgetting to do so. I’m often surprised where my images end up being used, and this is one of the coolest instances. I sent them a few hundred images for consideration and I love their selection. The colors, the light, the rain… love it. Now I need to make a trip out to Las Vegas and sit at that sushi bar!

Capturing the dynamic essence of one of the world's most visually fascinating cities, 'Now is Now Tokyo' offers an intimate exploration of urban life through the art of street photography.

The book features the distinctive perspectives of several acclaimed photographers who document the city's vibrant culture, bustling streets, and fleeting, intimate moments.

Here, we are featuring the work of Lukasz Palka.

'I've found over the years that just being out there on the streets for a few hours leads to creativity,' reflects Palka.

Born in Poland, raised in the U.S., and living in Tokyo since 2008, Palka focuses on the layered complexity of the metropolis — drawing inspiration from photography legends like William Eggleston, Saul Leiter, and Alex Webb, alongside the cyberpunk visions of Blade Runner and Ghost in the Shell.

An essential volume for fans of Japan, photography enthusiasts, art lovers, and culture explorers, 'Now is Now Tokyo' presents the city as never before: diverse, surprising, and endlessly fascinating.

'Now is Now Tokyo' is available via the link in our bio.

Just rooftops I've been wanting to share. The first four shots are from my last visit to one the best Marugen buildings in Ginza. It's probably my last visit ever. I've been up there countless times, but it feels like a lifetime ago.

A little break from book promotion... some calm 'boring' photos of Tokyo I've been meaning to share for a while. When I'm photographing scenes like this I am always so at ease. My mind is focused, clear. The worries of the world wash away. Only my eye and the scene. I become one with it in a sense. The subjects become a small part of me. I take them with me — small treasures to be cherished.

In other news, I got a Nikon F5 and a bunch of rolls of CineStill (400 and 800). I'm looking forward to a novel path of expression... and wallet decimation.

Another idea for the book, NOW IS NOW TOKYO, was to go full-on neon cyberpunk neo-noir night street photography… I guess the final photos are somewhat in this vein anyway, but with a bit more thematic diversity. I suppose this is my ā€˜main’ direction when it comes to street photography. But I like to think I’m a bit more multifaceted than that.

Anyway, these 18 images are ones that I considered for the book but didn’t make the cut.

The book is out now in the EU and will be out in North America and Japan on June 30th. Links in bio!

When I was planning my section of NOW IS NOW TOKYO, I created two sets of images with different themes. One of them is shown here: a selection of mostly daytime daily life scenes from Tokyo. These are more humanistic than what ended up in the book. Some are even a bit humorous.

It was difficult to select only 10 or so photos. Whereas in TOKYO UNSEEN I had 180 pages to myself, I now had to really distil a vision into only a few images. I struggle with this because I don’t really pigeonhole myself into a single sub-genre of photography, let alone a style of street photography.

One avenue was to go down this road of Tokyo life. I really love the scenes in this set. I think my favorite image is the one of the man playing with the kendama. I watched him for a few minutes with varying levels of success from both of us—him landing the ball on the peg, and me timing the shot with my Ricoh. Eventually, the decisive moment was one of anticipation, where the ball is still in flight. Will it land?

A close second is the woman working in the lottery ticket booth. I love how her red lips fit neatly into the circle. It would have made a nice diptych with the woman putting on her lipstick on the stairs. Or perhaps that would have gone well with the umbrella woman leaving a trail of chaos behind her (it was the wind, of course). It’s fun to think about!

Anyway, I guess I’ll save these for another book.

I’ve been scared to make this post. It’s not just my own neck on the line this time…

Now is Now Tokyo, an anthology of street photography from the metropolis, will be released on April 29th in Europe and in the US and Japan on June 30th, both online and in book stores. Check the link in my profile!

When teNeues first approached me with this project over a year ago I was honored that they would ask me to work on another book of street photography from Tokyo. They were very happy with how TOKYO UNSEEN did the year before, but this time they wanted me to not only show my own work but to bring together a range of Tokyo’s street photographers and curate this next book.

Wow. I had never done something like this before. Suddenly a lot of responsibility weighed heavily on my shoulders, but of course I hid my apprehensions and agreed. This was an amazing opportunity, so of course I had to say ā€˜yes’. Today the hard work comes to fruition, and the book is about to be released. And still I am worried about how it will be received. I feel the urge to explain it, to tell everyone what I was thinking. I should refrain from that, at least for now. The work should speak for itself.

I believe in all of the talented photographers who are represented in the book, some well-known, some new to a larger audience. But all of them are voices from this great metropolis that is Tokyo. Whether the city inspires us profoundly or merely the place where we find ourselves, it is in a sense, the canvas on which we work.

The 18 photographers shown in this book each weave their own authentic view of the city. I hope you find them all enthralling!

I’ve lived in Japan since 2008, and from 2012 to 2023 I lived in Ikebukuro. This neighborhood holds a special place in my heart to this day. It’s where I learned to carry my camera with me every day, to shoot whatever I encountered. In Ikebukuro a metamorphosis took place within me. It’s where I learned to see.

Photography became intrinsic, instinctual, a part of every-day life—like breathing. It was no longer just something for special occasions. Every walk from my place to the station was a visual and mindful praxis. Each time I returned at night I took the long way home, passing through the nightlife enclaves of Ikebukuro—another chance to see, to photograph.

Ikebukuro is where I learned that the mundane is not so mundane. A dented pipe, a bare wall saturated with color, a decrepit parking lot, a hazy sunset over the urban expanse, a man smoking in darkness… Ikebukuro taught me that all is sacred when we truly see it. The camera’s only purpose is to save what we have seen for later consumption.

When I come back to Ikebukuro from time to time, I see it has not changed as much as the rest of Tokyo (though it is not unscathed). Whereas Shibuya has largely become a soulless theme park for tourists, Ikebukuro is still the raw, filthy, urban district that it was when I first got there over a decade ago. Though I’m sure even then it was already a shadow of what it was back in the 90s or the 80s… before my time. Aw well.

So, here are twenty photos in variety of genres, from myriad perspectives, of Ikebukuro.

This January passed my 10th anniversary since quitting my former day job and doing EYExplore full time. Back when I quit it felt like a huge risk. This workshop business could have gone nowhere, and I would’ve been in a tight spot with no income and, more importantly, no visa to allow me to stay in Japan (can’t have a work visa without work).

And yet here we are 10 years later, still going strong. So, here are some stats (I love me some good stats):

I’ve led 1,206 workshops since we started (technically in late 2015). That amounts to a total of 3,664 hours of workshop time. On those workshops I’ve met 2,393 people (but plenty of repeat clients in there).

We get great reviews too, pretty much 100% 5 stars, and plenty of repeat customers. Wow. I never really looked at these numbers in aggregate.

And that’s just me. That’s not counting the rest of our team at

(And yes, I have all these numbers because I am somewhat of an autist and keep everything in a very meticulous spreadsheet šŸ˜…šŸ˜…)

I’m proud of these last 10 years. I like to think that we provide something that makes people happy. I hope that’s true. And looking back at a decade of this work puts into perspective the impact I’ve had personally, and three EYExplore has had as a team. It’s not curing cancer, but it’s making the world a little bit better. At least I hope so!

Anyway, here are some recent photos, all taken during recent workshops. (And three of them will be in my upcoming book… but more on that later.)
