Caramel is one of those colors that means very different things to different people. Some people see it as being very warm, closer to copper and others see it as being more of a neutral light brown.
➡️ To me, the Joico NB series makes a true classic caramel. Not too warm and not too cool. It’s also rich and has a lot of reflection which is what makes caramel highlights so beautiful.
➡️ The NBs have violet in them which helps to soften the tone and negate the brassiness of raw lift. I used any combination of 7NB and 9NB depending on the desired result and I add clear based on how translucent I want the gloss to be.

What you leave out truly is just as, if not more, important than what you lighten. To create this dimensional look, I used a combination of:
✅ Fine teasy lights (for gray blending)
✅ Chunky weave and tease (for blended ribbons)
✅ Big sections of strategically placed depth (to make those highlights pop)
Her natural base color is a major player in the end result, doing more would have taken away from the look.

This client was feeling completely washed out by the lightness of her color. She wanted to remain blonde and have some dimension to make her grow out between appointments less noticeable, but she needed some life added back into her color.

➡️ To cover her gray and add some depth and richness to the root we applied a retouch that is a half shade darker and warmer than her natural base.
▪️Foils: Joico Silverlight & 20vol

➡️ While her retouch processed I applied her highlights and depth at the same time. For her highlight I took deep weaves and deep teases to create really blended ribbons.
➡️ I left lots of space between her highlights and added depth panel in those spaces for addition depth and richness. (I avoided the face frame area with these depth panels)
➡️ Everything was rinsed when the highlights were lifted to a level 9
▪️Root Smudge: LumiShine Gloss 20g 6NB 20g 4NWB
▪️Gloss: LumiShine Gloss 20g 7NB 20g 7NWB 30g 9NB
➡️ Back at the chair I applied her root smudge and gloss. I made sure to drop the root smudge 1” below the start of the highlight and brush thoroughly to blend the root smudge into the gloss.

I could talk all day about comparison and staying in your own lane, but I wanted to address this comment specifically because it is such a common feeling among hairstylists.
Here are the important things to remember:
- Just because you are seeing a lot of something doesn’t mean that’s the only way to grow or reach your audience.

When our clients want a soft subtle look we often think small. Small sections, tiny weaves. BUT contrast has a lot to do with how subtle the finished result will appear. In this case she’s a natural level 6 and her ends are closer to a 7 from natural lightening. This means at most we will have a 3 level difference between light and dark… not a lot of contrast.
Here’s the thought process ➡️ we know this is going to look subtle no matter what and we are going to have to go BIG to actually see any dimension. This means:

✅ Big sections of depth
✅ Big tease to create the BLEND
