Can you name all species of turtles native to Ontario? (the answer is at the end of this post!)
Of the 8 we have, all are declared vulnerable or at risk, mainly due to habitat loss & habitat fragmentation.
So what can we do to help them? Many things, like reducing pollution and protecting nesting sites as well as vital habitats.
We can also help them cross the road, of course! Remember to not displace them, and to only bring them accross, to the side towards which they are facing. 🐢

She is a caiman lizard (Dracaena guianensis) native to Ecuador, Colombia, Brazil, Peru, and the Guianas where they can be found basking on low branches in swampy and flooded areas and near streams. Their ability to both swim and climb helps them to avoid danger from jaguars, snakes, and crocodiles, using the water below as an escape route by simply plunging into it from their basking spot. These lizards are carnivores, and their powerful jaws and molar-like teeth help with crushing the shells of invertebrates they’ve chosen as lunch! Then they spit out the shell and only eat the yummy meat.
Caiman lizards face habitat loss due to deforestation and human pollution. In the past, these animals were also hunted for their skin but have since been put under the protection of CITES, which aims to decrease animal exploitation and regulate trading. You can help animals like Mango by remembering to reduce, reuse and recycle and by refusing to shop for leather products!

These animals may be fascinating, but they are extremely difficult to keep in captivity and require a lot more effort than for other animals. Please remember to never offer an animal as a gift, and research thoroughly prior to purchasing an animal to make sure you have the time and ressources to care for them. Turtles especially are a commitment for many many years!
Also remember to never take animals from the wild. Not only is it illegal, they more often than not cannot be returned to the wild afterwards. Of our 8 species of turtles, all are either endangered, threatened or special concern, and it is imperative we give them all the chances they can get, which means leaving individuals in their habitat to reproduce!
Last note, if you can no longer care for an aquatic turtle, please never release your pet into the wild! It might simply not survive, it might introduce pathogens, or become an invasive species. Better leave it to professionals! 😊🐢
