(3) A place for ideas.

I’ve never had a proper workspace at home. During the pandemic (has it really been half a decade since?), I worked from our dining table in a 1 bedroom apartment. Craft tools, sketchbooks, business supplies and reference books would take up most of our shelf space, storage space and every nook and corner that could fit a box. But we made it work.

After we moved to a new place, getting a proper workspace was on top of my list. It’s so much easier to be creative when you don’t have to plan, clean and organise things before getting into the actual work. Our bedroom had an adjacent walk-in close, and we decided to give that up for a home office space instead.

All the years of working from a dining table helped us design a space that really works for us and our habits.

Here are some of the things I love the most:

• Plenty of morning light
• An overhead adjustable light panel
• Easy access drawers that fit small stationary items and big A2 sketchbooks
• Shelves for reference books
• A secondhand desk chair that is low profile and super comfy

There are two work surfaces because I like having things in front of me while I work, and plenty of hidden storage because I like to put things away when I’m done. The desk is higher than a regular table for a more active sitting position, and has a forest green linoleum surface.

It’s a space for ideas, focus work and morning coffee. And I can’t wait to get to work. ☕️

(2) Changes and constants. LLB wasn’t a clear business idea from the start. It was an outlet to create something fun without pressure or expectations, and connect with people who love books.

Even almost a decade later, that hasn’t changed. While I don’t work on it full-time anymore, I get a lot of pleasure from having a small scale production going. Sometimes, out of the blue, a customer will email asking about coming restocks or telling me about a product they loved. It brings me so much joy.

And isn’t that enough?

I have been asked so many times whether I plan to sell or grow LLB. People (usually those who haven’t started a business themselves) offer well-meaning advice on what I should outsource, sell, buy or do to succeed. Some ideas are good. Some are great, even, as long as you’re not the one who has to do the work or lose sleep over it. I’ll smile and say, “It’s not in my plans right now.”

So what is really the plan? Is it not enough anymore to enjoy what you are doing? To be what you already are? My priorities may have shifted, but the perspective remains the same - to create products I’m proud of and love to make. To learn from people who have the same philosophy. To share my thoughts, ideas and craft with others who appreciate them.

I suppose there should be a lesson here? Maybe it’s to not obsess so much over efficiency and growth. Or to chill and not take things so seriously. Or just recognise when you’ve achieved something you’re proud of, even if everyone else is saying you could do more. You tell me:)

A conversation with my mum the other day:

«Do you still make those hand balms?»
«No, I haven’t really had the time…»
«They were great! No matter, I found a small one at the back of my closet.»
«What? But I never made small —»
«Look, my cracked skin has healed overnight! You should really make the big ones again, you know.»

My mum has been happily using my lip balms as cuticle balms all these years 😅 She works in a chemical lab, which means washing your hands multiple times every hour, and always have some kind of #lipbalms hand cream in her bag.

I actually started testing my hand balm recipe on her, because she’s been struggling with cracked and irritated skin for as long as I can remember, especially during wintertime ❄️

While our lip balm doesn’t follow the same recipe as Master Gardener’s Balm (which I hope to bring back at some point), they do work great as cuticle balms.

They have been assessed for use on the face, contain only three ingredients (organic shea butter, almond oil and beeswax) + essential oils, and are easy to carry in your purse.

Did you try our hand balms? Or have you ever tried our lip balms on your hands? Let me know below! 🙌 💛

(1) Beginnings and endings. Unfinished projects and postponed coffee dates. Plants drooping by the windows, books left unread on the shelves.

2024 was the year everything seemed to pile up. We moved - again. Travelled a lot. Adopted a cat. Made new friends, and reconnected with old ones. There were a lot of beginnings and not enough endings, a constant carousel of “plan to”, “ought to” and “forgot to”.

I don’t believe in productivity hacks and time management. We have limited energy because we often take on too much and let go of too little, not because we need to be more efficient.

I’m starting a new job in January. It’s the shortest time I’ve spent with a company, but I’ve become less patient as I grow older (for good and bad) and I’ve learned that not every leap of faith has to work out.

Change is a part of life. Rather than persevere just for the sake of it, let’s look at endings as an opportunity for a fresh start. Moving forwards means, inevitably, leaving some things behind and, quite often, disappointing yourself or others in the moment. If you know when to give things up, living with clarity becomes so much easier.

Forget the crumpled to-do lists. Throw away the projects you won’t finish, the tea that went cold; donate the clothes you never wear, trim down your resolutions for 2025. Stop the “ought to’s” and make more space for the things that fill you with joy and excitement.

Celebrate the beginnings AND the endings.

Happy New Year 🪴🌅

It’s getting close to the end of 2024. We won’t lie, it’s been a tough one! But I find that it makes me even more grateful for the good things we have.

For the month of November, we will donate €1 of every product sold (roughly 5-12% of our total sales) to Amnesty International. Every purchase from our website will count.🤲🌍

It is easy to feel overwhelmed these days, but doing a little for yourself or someone else goes a long way. Let us end 2024 on a good note ❤️

When someone starts their own business, they’re very often called “brave”.

And it’s true.

But, personally, I also feel like there is a bit of fear at play. The fear of NOT pursuing what you love. The fear of settling for the safe path. Sometimes that fear is the thing that gets you started - not because you’re brave, but because you can’t bear staying in your comfort zone any longer and wonder “What if?”

And sometimes, you might have commitments that keep you from jumping into the unknown. That’s okay. It takes a different kind of courage to accept that, and nurture your dream while you wait for the right moment. You are still as brave and strong.

Sending a big hug to all the business owners, the entrepreneurs, the artists, and the dreamers out there 🌈💕💐

Do you miss our hand sprays? 🙌

It’s no secret that rising costs are the main challenge for small businesses these days. While these sprays were very popular, the margins just weren’t there to keep making them long-term.

Juliet, one of our customers, sent us the second photo and gave us the idea that some people might like to DIY their own sprays! Especially since our bottles are reusable and we know many of you care about sustainability, we thought it would make for a great weekend project.

All you need is:

• A spray bottle
• Unscented liquid sanitiser
• Essentials oils (see below)

As with all our products, we create our own scent blends. The ratios we used for our Wicked Witch spray is as follows:

• Eucalyptus 30%
• Sweet orange 30%
• Mandarin or tangerine 25%
• Ho leaf 15%

You can find the instructions in our latest newsletter or, if you’re not a subscriber, DM us for a direct link.

We hope you try it out. Remember to tag us if you do!

Dear Gentle Reader,

Do you find yourself languishing in a state of melancholy following the grand conclusion of #bridgertonseason3? Are your humours unsettled, and your nights restless as you peruse endless memes of our beloved cast members?

Fear not, for we have just the remedy!

Allow us to present a most enchanting lip balm, its scent as soothing as a cup of well-brewed tea or a cherished, tattered novel. The fragrance is a harmonious blend of Earl Grey and chamomile, with the most delicate hint of lavender, sure to calm your frayed nerves and ease your sorrows. It may perhaps even transport you, if only for a moment, back to the days of elegance and romance.

Yours most devotedly
LLB

[In other words: Pride and Peppermint is back in stock! Regency Romance is sadly retired, but you might check out Sherlock’s Library if you don’t enjoy minty balms. And for the record, we would totally do an Eloise balm if it wasn’t for copyright issues 💕😜]

A few of our favourite things: A wall with books, comfy chairs. a skylight, enjoying a morning brew while looking out at a serene garden. Later we found the blue lamp in a local shop and brought it home. It is made by a Frenchman living in Vietnam.

These days we are so often encouraged to chase our dreams, aim high, and make the most of our time, that it is easy to forget that happiness can be found in the simplest things. Having and doing less are often better for our health and peace of mind, though may feel uncomfortable at first.

What’s your definition of a good morning? 🌻

Good skincare doesn’t have to be complicated. Just a few ingredients, simple tools (I’m using my trusty chocolate melter that’s been with me since the start!), and an infinite amount of patience.

It’s not the tools or the materials that make the product, but the time you spend researching, experimenting and adjusting for the perfect recipe 🌱

——

I started making cosmetics in late 2015 for Christmas. There was no business plan or thought of it becoming more than a relaxing hobby. In May 2016 I opened my Etsy shop and was floored when I got 8(!!) orders.

LLB has come a long way since then. There’s still no plan, other than to keep doing what I love for as long as I can. The journey is constantly changing, which is just the nature of being a small business. But the joy of creating something step by step with my own hands remains as strong as it has always been.

“You rarely have time for everything you want in this life, so you need to make choices. And hopefully your choices can come from a deep sense of who you are.”
