Commentary: the idea of painting a sphinx has been swimming in my head for about 8 months. It came to me while traveling in Vienna, and I’m glad I was able to carve out some time to create it.
I went through many iterations on how to approach this piece, and I took my time to experiment and do small painting studies to prep and learn. I documented the colors I used, how many washes, percentage of each medium applied etc. I think this part was productive, even if it was time consuming.
I did have one big setback though. I had to do the piece twice because the first time the watercolor paper had expired. Essentially the sizing of the paper, which regulates absorption speed on watercolor paper, had gone bad from age or humidity. Basically it felt like I was painting on a paper towel, and it also smelled funky as hell. Lesson learned!
Because of this I had to redraw it on some fresh paper. All in all I drew this sphinx about 4 times haha. Despite this setback, I learned a ton with this piece and I did get a good flow state on the second and final attempt.
“Failure” is part of the process and the greatest teacher. I’m glad I pushed through.

Commentary:
I was approached initially by in October to do some illustrations for the inner LP. Over a weekend of inspired back and forth over email, the vision of the art expanded into a full gatefold painting to pair with the stunning painting created for the cover.
The idea I had for this painting was to really model the composition and horizon line off of Arik’s piece, so that the viewer would experience the art in a cohesive way.
Since I had been focusing on pen and ink predominantly in 2025, I had to practice and study extra to get my painting to a place that I felt comfortable to deliver what I expected for myself. Ultimately, I am glad that I stepped out of my comfort zone, and I am very happy with how it came together. I learned a ton, and I am happy to expand my repertoire to this mixed media painting style.
As for the record, I do think this is Spirit Adrift’s strongest. It is doomy, dark, psychedelic, and cinematic in a way that is unique, yet pays respects to legend like the Obsessed and Candlemass.

The journey of Spirit Adrift has come full circle. With their sixth album in a decade, mastermind Nathan Garrett is ready to unleash the band’s final chapter.
‘Infinite Illumination’, the Spirit Adrift swansong, is a return to the wellspring that first inspired it all and testament to a band that in the last 10 years has crafted an impeccable signature thoroughly their own, molded from the elemental matter of more than a half century of heavy metal exaltation.
“Infinite Illumination” has a directness to it, a sense of urgency and raw intensity. The songs feel inevitable, like they had to be driven out from deep within during a time of great upheaval.
The album has a palpable sense of malaise both spiritual and terrestrial, personal and universal, inflicted via crushing traditional Doom riffs, thunderous mid-tempo marches and Garrett’s impassioned vocal delivery.
At its core “Infinite Illumination” carries both the weight of conclusion and the troubling realization that it is rarely painless to say farewell.
