Spreeuwen zwermen namelijk niet zomaar. Het gebeurt meestal tegen zonsondergang, als ze zich verzamelen om samen een slaapplek op te zoeken. Wat je dan ziet – die golvende, bijna hypnotiserende vormen in de lucht – heet een murmuration. Ze doen dit om zichzelf te beschermen tegen roofvogels, zoals een slechtvalk. Door continu van richting te veranderen, raken roofdieren gedesoriënteerd. Maar eerlijk: het voelt bijna alsof je naar een perfect gechoreografeerde dans kijkt.
De truc is dus timing én geduld. Vaak begint het rustig, kleine groepjes die samenkomen, en dan ineens… BAM. Daar is het. De lucht die beweegt.
En een kleine, maar belangrijke les die ik inmiddels ook heb geleerd: als ze recht boven je vliegen, hoor je ineens een zacht getik. Alsof het begint te regenen. Maar nee… dat zijn geen regendruppels.. 💩
Hoe dan ook: elke keer weer een magisch moment. Utrecht op z’n mooist, gewoon in de lucht. ✨
