More than belts and stripes, this was about confidence, growth, and the culture we’re building together.
Coach Luccas started by gathering the kids separately before bringing them out to their parents, giving them a moment to settle in, focus, and feel proud of themselves before stepping in front of a crowd.
Each student then demonstrated a move of their choice, building confidence through action and learning to trust themselves under pressure.
Every promotion represented consistency, discipline, courage, and growth both on and off the mats.
We’re proud of what’s being built here and grateful to every family trusting us with their kids’ journey.
This is only the beginning.
First off, you can call us Coach or by our names. Whatever feels most natural to you.
At Lira Jiu Jitsu, we believe great coaching starts with connection. We want our students to feel comfortable asking questions, learning through mistakes, and becoming part of a team that genuinely supports one another.
Luccas is the head professor and technical leader of the academy. As a World Champion athlete and coach, his passion is teaching jiu jitsu in a way that helps students truly understand what they’re doing and why they’re doing it. His coaching focuses heavily on details, timing, awareness, and building confidence in every position, whether someone is training for their first class or preparing for competition.
Maggie oversees the culture, operations, and day-to-day experience of the academy while also coaching and training alongside the team. As a professional athlete and competitor, her focus is helping students build confidence, consistency, and trust in themselves on and off the mats. She believes the environment matters just as much as the training itself, and works to create a space where people feel welcomed, challenged, and motivated to grow.
Our mission is to create complete jiu jitsu practitioners through detailed instruction, strong fundamentals, and a supportive training environment. We value effort, consistency, respect, and being a great training partner. We want students to leave every class feeling like they learned something, improved something, and were part of something bigger than themselves.
We look forward to welcoming you to Lira Jiu Jitsu
This weekend, she won the Orlando Open and earned her blue belt on the podium.
What makes this story special isn’t just the result.
It’s how she got there.
Every day, Kurly shows up to the 6:15 a.m. class alongside a group of women who also started their journeys here as white belts. She trains in an all-levels room because at Lira, we don’t believe jiu jitsu should be separated into boxes. You can’t predict what someone will do in a match, especially at white belt, so we believe athletes should learn everything from the beginning, how to think, adapt, listen, and perform jiu jitsu in every position.
Kurly became the perfect example of that philosophy.
From the way she carried herself on the mat, to the calmness in her presence while competing, to her ability to listen and apply coaching in real time, she showed what true growth looks like. Comfortable on top. Comfortable on bottom. Focused on performing jiu jitsu rather than chasing a win.
And because of that, the wins came naturally.
Congratulations.
Since day one, the goal hasn’t been just to make him “win.” The goal has been to make him truly understand Jiu-Jitsu.
When Matias first came to us, he was extremely explosive and athletic, but that explosiveness sometimes caused mistakes in competition. We slowed things down. We focused on movement, timing, control, awareness, and performing the Jiu-Jitsu he actually knows instead of relying only on speed and intensity.
This weekend, all that work showed.
Matias became Orlando Open Featherweight Grey Belt Champion with 3 dominant performances and 2 submissions, beating kids from excellent schools under great professors.
I’m incredibly proud of him not just because he won, but because of HOW he won.
What makes this even more impressive is that he’s been doing this without having many consistent training partners his age, size, or level in the room. Imagine where he’ll be once he does.
So this is also a message to parents and young competitors:
If your child wants to become a champion, learn REAL Jiu-Jitsu the right way, compete at a high level, and truly evolve as an athlete and person, Lira Jiu-Jitsu is the place to be.
The future is bright. 🥋🏆
But the real work happens long before the referee says go.
It’s preparing the body, calming the moment, building trust, paying attention to details, knowing what your student needs to hear, and being there after it’s all over too.
Especially with kids, coaching is so much more than medals.
It’s helping them walk into hard moments feeling prepared and confident on their own.
That’s always the goal.
Maggie earns her 2nd Degree black belt after 6 years.
Luccas earns his 1st Degree, marking 3 years at black belt.
Stripes can come with time
but what they represent is built on the mats, round after round, year after year.
The hours, the discipline, the competition.
That’s what solidifies it.
Congratulations to all the students who leveled up today, truly a special day, Jan 6th was our gym’s 1 year anniversary and promoting you guys the day before my birthday is the best gift I could have received.
