What is CLB 7, REALLY?
Most people think that French exams like TEF Canada or TCF Canada are just a test of basic French, a few greetings, a few verbs, some simple conversations. But that couldn’t be further from the truth.
CLB 7 is NOT about basic communication. It’s about your ability to express well-developed opinions, justify your ideas, and debate intelligently on complex, real-world issues like technology, health, education, environment, feminism, immigration, and a lot more!
You’re expected to show that you can handle abstract topics, use nuanced vocabulary, and structure your arguments logically, justify with examples, ALL in French.
So when your immigration advisor tells you that you need to “get CLB 7,” please don’t mistake it for a BASIC language requirement. The reality is that these exams assess your cognitive and LINGUISTIC MATURITY in French, NOT just your grammar or memorized phrases.
And here’s the HARD TRUTH: the evaluation standards for French tests are much much MUCH HIGHER than those for English exams like IELTS! The examiners don’t just want to see if you “understand” French, they want to see if you can THINK in French, ARGUE in French, and ANALYZE in French.
So if you’re aiming for CLB 7 or above, please buckle up and prepare seriously. It’s NOT about “Bonjour” and “Comment ça va?”, it’s way BEYOND that. It’s about developing your fluency, structure, reasoning, and vocabulary depth to perform like an independent, confident French speaker who can engage with real-world issues.

Aishwarya started off as a beginner and did just 27 HOURS of live classes with us for her TCF Canada exam prep to target CLB 7. The rest? Pure self-study. Her first session with us was on 16th January 2025, and she appeared for her exam on 8th September 2025.
