“Each day—in air, on land or sea—brave people work to keep us free.
But while they’re serving far and wide,
back home their families serve with pride.”

Full of heartfelt vignettes—a grandfather caring for a toddler while mom is deployed, a family video calling at bedtime, an empty chair at graduation—this book is a tribute to the sacrifices made by military personnel and their families.

💌 I’d love to send my copy of this book to a child who has a family member currently serving. Not an official giveaway but if you know a child who would find comfort in this book, let me know in the comments and I’ll randomly choose someone next Monday and reach out to you.

👭 Do you ever feel like there’s two (or more!) versions of you?

In this story, a young Korean boy introduces us to his mom:

“At school, Outside Mom gives one-word answers.
Yes. No. Okay.
‘Your mom is so quiet,’ a dad says.
Quiet? Not my mom!
Inside Mom speaks Korean quickly and loudly and has a story about everything!”

This ode to code-switching becomes reflective as he finds himself feeling unlike himself, “like an Outside Me,” in his new classroom.

His mom gently reassures him that he will find friends that make him comfortable and safe enough to be fully himself, just like she has found with her community:

“What I love best of all is when I get to see Inside Mom… Outside!”

Amy Wu may not be able to make the perfect bao and Hiro may not be able to make the perfect ramen (yet!) but I think I’ve nailed it with this perfect book pairing!

🥟 Amy Wu can do a lot of things, but she just can’t make the perfect bao like her mom, dad, and grandma. They always end up being too full or too empty or simply fall apart.

But Amy doesn’t give up! She keeps trying and eventually comes up with an idea that’s perfect for her: using smaller pieces of dough instead of adult-sized pieces that are too big for her hands.

🍜 Hiro LOVES ramen. He loves eating ramen, he loves watching his dad make it every Sunday, and on his seventh birthday, he decides he’s ready to try his hand at making the perfect bowl of ramen.

But when nothing goes according to plan, Hiro feels frustrated and ready to give up.

“’My ramen is horrible. It isn’t perfect like yours.’
‘Ramen doesn’t have to be perfect,’ says Dad. ‘Mom and Mia are happy you’re making dinner for them—and I bet you can still make their ramen special.’”

With encouragement from his dad, Hiro embraces the power of YET and in the meantime, he serves his own unique takes on ramen with special toppings that are perfect for his family.

✨ Deciding where to stay in Seoul?

We booked a hotel right at the entrance of Ikseondong Hanok Village for the second time (2019 and 2026) and just love how walkable the area is. (And if you like late night vibes, it’s full of pochas at night.)

You can easily get to all of these places within a 15-20 minute walk or less:
🤍 Ikseondong Hanok Village (obviously)
🤍 Changdeokgung
🤍 Bukchon Hanok Village
🤍 Cheonggyecheon
🤍 HiKR Ground
🤍 Gyeongbokgung (we didn’t go this time and opted for Changdeokgung)
🤍 Insadong and Ssamzigil (I didn’t think to take any photos/videos because I was busy shopping)

On that note, confession: As someone who doesn’t typically make travel content, putting this together was a struggle 😅 Slim pickings when I went through my camera roll because 99% of it was of my kids rather than capturing the actual places and vibes. Hopefully this still gives you a sense of it all, but feel free to ask me any questions!

Hoping to make a part 3 focusing on Hongdae and/or picnicking by the Han River but… we’ll see. 😆

Over the past few years, I’ve seen a lot of books compared to The Rabbit Listened, and this affirming story is the first one that I’ve felt like lived up to the comparison.

⛈️ One spring day, Bear wakes up feeling blue and notices a storm cloud sitting above his head. He’s not sure why and nothing his friends try can cheer him up.

“‘Bear,’ said Squirrel, softly knocking at the door. ‘Can I come in?’
‘I’m not much fun today, I’m afraid,’ said Bear.
‘That’s okay with me,’ said Squirrel.”

Squirrel stays with Bear and sometimes they sit in silence and other times they talk. The storm cloud doesn’t go away right away, but Squirrel shows Bear that he’s not alone.

Their conversation is gentle and full of compassion. I love these exchanges between Bear and Squirrel:

🐻: Can you see it? The cloud above my head?
🐿️: No, I’m afraid I can’t. But I believe you that it’s up there.

🐿️: Thank you, Bear.
🐻: For what?
🐿️: For letting me in and telling me about your storm cloud. That was very, very brave.
And although the storm cloud still followed, Bear wasn’t scared anymore.

“Love you more than a million very early mornings
Love you more than one… two… three more five-minute warnings

It’s #TeachKidsTuesday and today I have two picture book biographies—one a household name and one that was new to me.

👉🏼 Swipe to learn more about the iconic storyteller Hans Christian Andersen, and Ah Bing, a Chinese American immigrant and namesake of the Bing cherry, who feels like he’s stepped fresh out of a folktale like a Chinese Paul Bunyan.
