Happy New Year my loves! This Burns Night, alongside my usual running hither and tither and addressing haggises, I thought it would be nice to offer something a lil different for burns night festivities. Being a storyteller I thought the best way to do this was some fun queered version of Scottish classic folk tales, expect dragons, selkies, kelpies and changelings (and some poems thrown in for good measure)!
Why? So I flipping love Burns Night, but our auld bard wasn’t exactly a saint and it seems important to keep asking questions of those who we choose to celebrate, so I figured why not celebrate the tradition of getting together for performance and warmth, but also change up the narrative a bit and shed light on why (even for his time) Burns wasn’t exactly a wonderful human being.
This isn’t to say folk shouldn’t be enjoying their more classic nights and celebrations, I know I will be, but if I you fancy celebrating Scottish culture with a little less of the problematic figurehead, or just fancy some banging stories and poems, get on down to lighthouse for an informal evening of delightful tales.
The last event I did at lighthouse sold out quicksmart, so grab tickets right away to avoid disappointment! There are affordable tickets at just a fiver and if you want to come but that’s still a bit much, just dm me and I’ll sort you out.
Please spread the word and come on down, catch you all there xxxxx
We’re here until Wednesday evening, 11.30-5. See you soon!

Not much of one for a COME SHOP HERE post, but honestly if you hate the frenzy, Edinburgh’s Southside just now is still lovely and chill, the coffee shops are still open, and if you really do need to think beyond the bookshops we also have:
- Digger (2 doors down, fair trade blankets and soaps and candles and funny knickknacks and vintage toys)
- (for those who like their gifts to be alive and leafy)
- (yes, also books, but second hand and special edition and good vibes)
- Armstrong for vintage clothing
- (pencils and paper and ALL artist needs!)
And loads of other wee indies to buy specialty teas or gift wrap or vouchers… anyway! Skip the shopping centre, we got you.
The Fraud is a meticulous account of the sordid machinations that delivered Starmer to Number 10 - a journalistic deep dive that surfaces layers of dirt, donations and deliberate division. The book goes a long way to explaining Labour's right-wing slide under his leadership.
