0–6 months: ideally babies this young should avoid direct sunlight where possible, as their skin is extremely delicate and burns very quickly. Short periods outside are absolutely fine, but try to keep them mainly in the shade with a sun hat, lightweight clothing and airflow around the pram.
6–12 months: older babies can usually tolerate slightly longer periods outdoors, but still need regular breaks from the heat. After around 10–20 minutes in direct sun, move to a shaded area, offer fluids and reapply sun cream if needed.
1–2 years: toddlers are often constantly moving, running around and less aware when they’re getting too hot. Around 20–30 minutes in direct sun at a time is usually plenty before encouraging a shaded break, cooling down and offering water.
2+ years: older children can generally manage longer periods outdoors, but they still need regular hydration and shade breaks, especially during peak UV hours. Even confident swimmers and active toddlers can overheat quicker than adults realise.
Signs your little one may be getting too hot can include flushed cheeks, damp hair, fussiness, lethargy or fewer wet nappies. Always use at least SPF 30+ with UVA/UVB protection, hats, lightweight clothing and plenty of fluids ☀️🩷
