I mean… check out that evolution ✨ I’ve come a long way 😊 and it’s honestly good to see it sometimes 👀 Even if it’s just in just 4 quick pictures 📸 They really tell a story 👩‍🔬 I wouldn’t just call them chapters in my life… they’re whole books of a life all on their own 📚
☀️
☀️
☀️
I can see how I’ve grown up so much too! 👵🏼 I got rid of my glasses 🤓 I did SOOO much science 👩‍🔬 I’m a Doctor now 🎓 and I think I look so much more confident than I did before my PhD 🤩
☀️
☀️
☀️
Even if the PhD drained me (and it did) 🪫 I wouldn’t change it for the world 🌎🌍🌏 It’s made me into the wonderful, smart, beautiful person that I am today 😍 and I’m not implying I wasn’t all those things before 😉 I just feel like I am MORE so now 😊
☀️
☀️
☀️
I had a lot of fun trying to find a pre-PhD picture of me btw 😂 Soooo many memories 🤯😂 Anyways!! I do hope this post resonates with you! It really put some things into perspective for me!! 😊😊😊

I know detoxing isn’t a real thing 😂 but sometimes it does feel like you should need to after doing a PhD 🙈 I don’t know how it would work 😅 but also… just a detox probably wouldn’t be enough 🤣 dialysis is the only option to really remove the trauma 😝
☀️
☀️
☀️
Does anyone else feel like this? 🙋🏼‍♀️ Or am I alone in still trying to find myself back after finishing my PhD 1.5 years ago 👀 Maybe I’m just horrible at getting over it 😂 Or haven’t taken the time to do so properly?? 🙈 Most likely it’s a bit of both 🤪 but it’s fine I’ll get over it one day….. I hope 😳

Science is truly magical 🪄 There are so many things to love about science 🥰 I don’t know how I managed to condense it down to just 10 things 😱 Although I did leave some things out 😅 the list was already so long 😂 but I can’t help it!! I LOVE SCIENCE!!!! 🧬
☀️
☀️
☀️
We spend a lot of time talking about the challenges we face 🤓 which is completely fair and what keeps these accounts so real 😍 which is honestly something I love about scientists 💗 and I wanted to bring some positivity and love back into the community 🤩 Not to romanticize, just to remind and remember why science is so fun! 🥳
☀️
☀️
☀️
I hope this post can bring a little bit of joy to your day 👩‍🔬 because I know how hard, long, and draining days in science can be 🫠 it’s nice to think about how cool it actually is that you’re doing what you’re doing 🧬 and that we live in a world where we can study so much 😍 It’s just fantastic isn’t it?!

A question/feedback I often received from other scientists was that my research didn’t have enough mechanistic data 📊 or at least not the “right” type of mechanistic data 😕 So this got me thinking about this question 🤓 do we in science lack mechanistic data?
☀️
☀️
☀️
This is probably a very biology related question 😅 but maybe it’s also applicable in other fields! 👩‍🔬 Let me know! 😊 I also know there are several ways to prove causation with just data alone using techniques like Mendelian randomization and such 🤓 but I guess that’s still different than a true mechanistic study 😅
☀️
☀️
☀️
I’m very curious what your guyses opinions are gonna be 😃 let’s talk more in the comments 🤩

Maybe it sounds weird that chemistry experience wasn’t required for my job as a chemist 😅 but it’s true! I have a bachelors in biology, a masters in biomolecular sciences, and a PhD in immunology/cardiology 🫀 I did get a minor in chemistry during my bachelors… but that’s about it as far as chemistry experience goes 😂
☀️
☀️
☀️
But that wasn’t what the hiring people found most necessary for my role 🤓 They really wanted someone who could think critically and design and carry out good experiments 👩‍🔬 and if there’s something a PhD teaches you it’s how to design a good experiment 😎 So yea! I gotchu on that 🤩

This is my current Monday mood guys 😊 I hate how horrible I’ve been about posting!! 🫣 I really wanna do better 😇 Maybe this will be the week!! We’re starting out with just a Monday chill post 😅 Sorry if it isn’t the most scintillating post of ever 🙈 but I’m just happy I managed to put something together! 😂
☀️
☀️
☀️
I have been enjoying this little break I’ve been taking though 😊 I’ve just needed some time to chill and clear my head 🧘🏼‍♀️ which I think I’ve been quite successful at! 😃 so hopefully that means I can get back into the swing of making science related content for you all 💃🏼 sound like a plan??

I’ve gotten this question quite a few times now since I started talking about how I switched industries after my PhD ☢️ So I thought I would make a little post for you guys to discuss this topic a bit further 😊 I hope this is the information you were all looking for 🤓
☀️
☀️
☀️
Switching subjects in science is still hard! 🥵 I had A LOT of learning to do when I first started 👩‍🔬 Especially in this subject area that I knew very little about 😅 But I did know how to do science and research 🤓 and I realized that that was a skill I really brought to the table 😊 and it was easy to apply even in a new subject area 😃
☀️
☀️
☀️
And now that I’ve learned a lot about my new subject area and a lot of the wet skills too 👩‍🔬 I really feel at home in it 😊 I mean… there’s still things I’m learning 📚 but it seems like less of a mountain to climb 🏔️ Now I know the operational side of things too I can also more easily find my way to the right people to talk to 😃 which makes doing my experiments just that much easier and more fun 🥳

Have you ever best friended this hard? 😍 we have! 😊 She’s not a scientist, and she can still tell you EXAAAACTLY what I’ve studied 🤩 And be right!! 😉
☀️
☀️
☀️
I may or may not have talked A LOT about my project over the years 😂 like a lot a lot 😅 but a PhD can be really all consuming 😰 and what better outlet than by venting to your best friend 🤭 Like all the time 😅 for years and years 😂
☀️
☀️
☀️
And now she’s basically the second most expert of T cells, triglycerides, and transcriptomics 🤩 and that’s so wonderful!! 🥰 I wouldn’t want anyone else being my alternate expert 💕 maybe I should put her as corresponding author on my articles 😂
☀️

It’s time to set the tables straight! ☝🏼 You are not, and could not, EVER be “behind” because you did a PhD 😊 Just because it’s not the “normal” or “traditional” path doesn’t make it the wrong one 🤓 Plus… who wants to be normal when you could be a Doctor instead 💁🏼‍♀️
☀️
☀️
☀️
I say this because I get this comment a lot “Don’t you worry you’ll be late to life events if you do a PhD?” 🤔 Who says all life events have to happen in your late 20s early 30s? 🤨 and why isn’t a PhD considered one of these “life events”? 🧐 If it’s something you really want to go for, do it! Be proud! 🤩
☀️
☀️
☀️
And if those “life events” are something you truly want, that’s great too! 😁 It’s not always easy to combine with a PhD but it is possible! 😊 It just takes some planning and organizing 😃 So don’t let fear hold you back if a PhD is something you really want to do 😊 You’re on the right path if you chose it 🥰

Tell me I’m wrong! 😜 When I was doing my PhD I felt like an old lady 👵🏼 Mostly near the end of my PhD 😅 Cause that time in my life was tough 🥵 It cost me a lot of effort to go out and be social and not feel guilty about having a good time when I felt like I should be working 😰
☀️
☀️
☀️
But now that I’m finished with my PhD 🎓 my energy is slowly being returned to me 🔋 and I feel like going out and meeting friends is fun again 🤓 Almost like time went backwards 😂 when I was younger I felt older and now that I’m older I feel younger 😁
☀️
☀️
☀️
And my energy did not come back immediately after my PhD finished 😅 I really thought it would 😇 But that’s not how it works… it takes time to start to feel good again 😊 and have energy again 🪫 but I’m excited to share that you will get there!! 🤩 Better days are coming!!
