Sifting through for the right story, awaiting with excitement to listen, on the couch in a bookstore designed with you in mind.
For three days, kitchen managers from across North Carolina gathered under the leadership of Head Start Director Tanya Dennis for a time of rest, restoration, and recognition. And somehow, Liberation Station became the final stop on that journey.
We had the opportunity to sit, listen, and learn from the women who have fed generations of children. The stories shared in that room carried so much tenderness, resilience, exhaustion, wisdom, and love. Again and again, the same desire surfaced: to simply feel appreciated. To be recognized for their contribution. To know that the work they’ve poured decades into mattered.
At one point, someone said they believed they were “created for a time such as this.” And honestly, sitting in that room, I believed it too.
Collectively, the people gathered had given nearly 230 years of service to this work. Some had been in the school system for over 40 years. Forty years of early mornings. Forty years of feeding children before tests, after hard nights at home, during celebrations, during grief, during life itself.
Today reminded me that while our shelves are lined with Black stories, there are also living stories all around us. Stories carrying wisdom. Stories carrying sacrifice. Stories worthy of preservation.
What a gift it was to sit at their feet. What a gift it was to listen. And what an honor it was for Liberation Station to hold space for such a beautiful gathering.
To every cafeteria worker, kitchen manager, nutrition staff member, and food service worker: thank you. You have nourished far more than hunger.

Not in the sound of a cello resting against brown skin like it always belonged there.
Today is our 2nd Blackout Author Showcase at Liberation Station Bookstore, and I keep thinking about how often Black children are asked to perform identity instead of simply live inside of it.
As if Blackness only counts when it is loud enough.
Urban enough.
Marketable enough.
Digestible enough.
But this?
This is Blackness too.
A teenage boy sitting in a bookstore built for our stories, fine tuning his cello before the room fills with Black authors, Black readers, Black imagination, Black futures.
No performance.
No explanation.
No permission needed.
Just softness.
Study.
Artistry.
Discipline.
Curiosity.
Joy.
We created Liberation Station because our children deserve spaces where they do not have to shrink or exaggerate themselves to belong. They deserve room to explore every note of who they are becoming.
Today, the cello sings.
The books breathe.
The stories gather.
And somewhere inside all of it, a Black child gets to witness that there is no single way to be beautifully, fully, undeniably Black.

Welcome to The Station, Kazmere. We’re so glad you’re here.
A man named Francisco walked in from off the street.
Disheveled. Tired. Carrying more than what we could see.
He didn’t ask for a book first.
He asked, “What do y’all do here?”
We told him we sell children’s books.
His next question:
“Do you have mental health services?”
And then
he asked for food.
So we did what we do.
We got him a bag.
We made sure he could sit.
We made sure he could eat.
No judgment.
No spectacle.
Just care.
While he sat outside, I made the calls crisis response, EMS, support systems because safety matters. Dignity matters.
Later, I reached his mother.
She told me he had been missing since Saturday.
Schizophrenia.
Paranoia.
Bipolar disorder.
No medication.
And I just kept thinking
how easily our people are criminalized for needing help.
But today, he was met with something different.
He was met with patience.
With coordination.
With people who chose to see him all the way through.
This is what it means to do the work.
Because Liberation Station is not just a bookstore.
It’s a place where people can land.
So when you ask what your donations support
they support moments like this.
A bag filled with food.
Diapers for a parent trying to make it through the week.
Pads for someone who can’t afford to bleed with dignity.
A couch where someone can sit and not be questioned before they are cared for.
This is community.
This is responsibility.
This is love in practice.
And if you see him
straw hat, torn jeans, walking
don’t judge him.
Pray for him.
Because he could be your son.
Your brother.
Your grandchild.
And today, he was ours.

When I’m not selling books,
I’m usually somewhere listening to Three 6 Mafia,
laughing with my children,
or building something that didn’t exist before us.

So I just wanted to come in and say—

I love us in our fullness.

I left because the system wasn't built for my son.
Emerson is autistic. He was nonverbal until age five. And when I watched educators try to teach him, I realized something devastating:
They were teaching his diagnosis, not my child.
They saw limitations. I saw brilliance that communicated differently.
They saw deficits. I saw a boy who taught himself to read through books because stories were his first language.
They wanted to fix him. I wanted to free him.
So I made a choice that terrified me: I left my teaching career. I pulled both Langston and Emerson out of traditional school. I started homeschooling them through The 40 Acre Institute—a radical reimagining of education rooted in the brilliance of Black childhood.
And I asked myself: If the books we need don't exist in schools, where do we find them?
That question became Liberation Station Bookstore.
I didn't start Liberation Station because I wanted to be an entrepreneur. I started it because I needed my sons—especially Emerson—to see themselves reflected in literature as whole, worthy, brilliant, and capable.
Every single day. Not as an afterthought. Not as "special needs." But as the complex, beautiful, neurodivergent Black boys they are.
Books became Emerson's bridge to the world. Before he could speak, he could read. Before he could tell me what he needed, he could show me through the pages of stories that saw him.
So I built a bookstore where every book centers Black joy, Black intelligence, Black futures. Where autistic children can find themselves. Where homeschooling parents can find curriculum that doesn't erase us. Where educators can find books that teach the CHILD, not the diagnosis.
Liberation Station exists because I refused to let a system that wasn't designed for us define what my sons become.
Today, Emerson is 10, verbal, brilliant, creative, and exactly who he was always meant to be.Not despite his autism, but inclusive of all that he is Langston Is 15 thriving in education that centers, his curiosity and brilliance.This is what liberation looks like when you service.The child and not the diagnosis.
