Last night was the North America 50 Best Restaurant awards. As was the case last year, Canada scored big! (If not in hockey, we’ll take restaurants!). Big ups to Québécois winners,,, newcomer to the list, and top scorer again this year,. Big ups to on the Quebec front as well. But there’s a lot more to celebrate than just our backyard with and the newcomer hitting #2,, which is in Calgary, a city until recently better known for steak houses than fine dining. And also Toronto’s coming in at #8! So kudos to them all! A special call out to Best North American pastry chef winner, of Lysée in New York, introduced to me by this week and possibly to most lovely chef I have ever had the pleasure to meet.
But that said, there were just so many fantastic chefs at this event, and at a time when Canadians are shunning American produce and pulling American wines and spirits off our shelves (thank you President Trump 🤔) it was heartwarming to see this event bring us together with our neighbours to the south.
Politics may drive us apart but food and hospitality keep us together and thank God for that! Now I want to try Chicago’s, the #1 restaurant last night and especially The Grey in gorgeous Savannah Georgia helmed by Best Female chef winner,, a great example for all the women in need of a role model.
So congrats to all and if I could see one thing change, how about a few more Quebec City restaurants on that list? 🙏
Fingers crossed for 2027 😁🤞

Lesley Chesterman spent nearly three decades as the Montreal Gazette’s restaurant critic, eating her way through the city’s dining rooms with a rigour few could match.

These days she writes on Substack, travels widely, and remains a sharp observer of restaurant culture in the country.

As Quebec’s second Michelin Guide approaches, she questions whether the city’s restaurants are built for what the guide rewards—and what chasing stars really costs.

Reluctantly left beautiful Lisbon this morning after 10 days in Portugal. Happy to spend my last days with my good friend,, who has called Portugal his home now for over 20 years. I love the city, I love the food, the views, the tiles, the wine and so much more. But what really love about Portugal is the warm welcome from the people.
Tchau Portugal, I can’t wait to return! Portugal 🇵🇹
I’ll be writing about some incredible meals I enjoyed here in a few upcoming Substacks.
I’ve been in Portugal for six days now and that’s how long it has taken to be completely charmed by this beautiful country filled with the most hospitable people. My trip now turns to Lisbon, but here’s are some snapshots from Porto. #Porto #Portugal #Presstrip #50bestrestaurants

Thrilled to finally get to share the cover of my next English cookbook, published by, set to release on March 24! Available now for pre-order so remember, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day and don’t-we-all-love-Montreal day are right around the corner. Enjoy!

So a few nights ago we had the chance to visit the fabulous bar, in Mexico City. What a wild and wonderful bar — or make that three-bar complex. Beautiful cocktails, cool crowd, party-hearty owner (picture co-owner Rodrigo Urraca) and great playlist. But what was really fascinating was the behind-the-scenes tour of the kitchen where we saw how they made infusions, clarifications, and the most pristine ice. Customers must reserve far in advance and you can only stay 90 minutes. But in that time, you’ll enjoy some pretty fine beverages served by great people. 😁👍 #50bestbars
I always thought it was extremely unkind for people to post about Mexican or Caribbean experiences when it is cold and snowy in Montreal. But hey, it’s also fun to see a fabulous hotel and this is ONE FABULOUS HOTEL! I’m at the, #8 top hotel in the world according to the and boy oh boy is it something. It’s like I died and everything they said about paradise is true because if heaven exists, it is this hotel. Enjoy the slideshow and yes it is extremely expensive but paradise doesn’t come cheap!
