I’m inspired by the everyday things we surround ourselves with, especially when something stands out and catches my eye.

My favorite ‘detail’ is the color, the blanket is even more beautiful in real life.
→ Your dream place to think and find inspiration (anywhere in the world)?
Anywhere really, as long as I have a place to set up my drawing tools.
→ What emotion do you hope people feel when they see your work?
I hope people feel that everything holds a certain beauty, if you’re open to seeing it.

For the magazine of, accompanying an essay by Yolanda Entius. The illustration is based on an old photograph showing the author’s mother holding her two children by the hand. At first glance it reads as intimacy, but in the essay the mother is described as a much harsher, more distant presence. I wanted to show that tension in the image; the surface of closeness versus what is actually felt underneath, where the mother has a firm grip on the children while they seem to struggle to break away or turn from her.

Swipe for 1 meager process shot (after the first photo I forgot documenting as so often:). I usually start with a rough sketch in Procreate to figure out composition and colour. With tight deadlines, most decisions need to happen before the actual painting starts. Afterwards I scan the painting, draw the lines separately, and layer the two pieces digitally so edits after feedback stay manageable.

I’m showing around 25 works on paper, ranging from S to XL. I made these in the period after my stay at, where I spent two weeks pushing my boundaries, and going beyond them. It was exactly what I needed.
My nights were spent in a caravan by the river. At the crack of dawn I’d get up and start painting, going until I was so tired I’d crawl back to my cozy corner among the reeds. Back in my small studio in Amsterdam, I somehow started working even bigger.
I’m an illustrator, that’s how I make my living, and I genuinely love everything about it. When I returned to making autonomous work a couple of years ago (I originally graduated as a fine artist), I was afraid the two practices might clash. But the opposite turned out to be true.
In my autonomous work, you can clearly see my hand as an illustrator: bold, direct, and clear. And my illustration work has become more expressive because of it.

Back when I was working purely digital, I couldn’t have imagined being commissioned to make physical paintings, let alone for a client like this. My background is in fine arts, and I’ve always tried to make my illustrations feel like they could stand on their own. For this series, that intention really came through. Hermès even referenced my personal work when they commissioned me; huge deal for me:)
