After dealing with a ringworm outbreak, we love and appreciate the volunteers that stepped up and helped us deep clean our building! While we’re still dealing with ringworm cats in our isolation rooms, we now have the peace of mind that our area is sparkly-clean and sporeless.
We also are extremely thankful for our fosters that took in our healthy cats so they wouldn’t be affected!

We at LCHS have experienced staffing changes, difficult rescues, and necessary program growth to better fit our community’s needs. It’s easy to get caught up in trying to save the masses, and it’s in these moments that the most precious souls are sent our way to remind us to slow down and celebrate each and every life saved.
Read the following story of one such rescue that happened recently, told by our Executive Director Lisa Glunt:
“On July 1st, during an already hectic day, a woman and her children walked through our front door with a dying kitten in a greasy Bojangles box. The kitten was approximately 8 weeks old, although his weight was closer to that of a 5 week old. He was wet, cold, pale, and completely motionless. The kitten was void of any signs of life, other than the occasional agonal breath that we expected to be his last, and an infestation of fleas crawling under his wet fur.
I quickly grabbed the kitten and rushed out the door to transport it to Paws & Claws Veterinary Hospital. On the way, Paws & Claws was called and asked to be on standby for a humane euthanasia IF the kitten would even make it there in time. You see, this kitten showed no sign of life, and that breathing is so sadly recognizable; but every animal deserves a chance for help, even if that help is a more swift end to suffering. By the time I arrived, the kitten was gone. It was too late. I walked in, handed him off and said “just check him to be sure”, but I knew he’d passed. A minute later, one of the veterinarians agreed, he’d coded and he was gone…

They tackled our old catio and helped deconstruct it to make way for our future new and improved one! We truly appreciate the time and effort these young people put in to help us.

The only thing that never seemed to improve was Reba’s health, as she was seemingly always battling an ear or upper respiratory infection. Treatment helped, but never seemed to fully clear up the issue, making it clear something else was going on.
After a visit to our veterinary partner, Paws and Claws Veterinary Hospital, we finally got an answer. Reba had a deep middle ear polyp; a typically benign growth that can cause chronic ear infections in cats.
Following her diagnosis, we took her to Capital Vet Specialists (CVS) for a CT scan to see if she had any more growths, and after the scan, it was confirmed it was just the one. The amazing team at CVS was able to fit her into their surgery schedule that same-day to remove the polyp. After surgery, her foster mother reported that she returned home in much better spirits: it was obvious that she was feeling a much-needed relief now that the growth was gone, and was energetic and loving.
With the growth gone, she now has the chance to live a comfortable, pain-free life, and one where we hope that her chronic battle with infections is over.
Stories like Reba’s remind us why rescue matters. Had she never been rescued from that dump, there’s no telling how long she would have continued to suffer or what her quality of life would have been.
We are incredibly grateful to both Paws and Claws Veterinary Hospital and Capital Veterinary Specialists for the exceptional care they provided to Reba. Not only did the team at CVS help improve Reba’s life, they also gave us a discount on the surgery, which allows us to continue providing care to cats just like her.
