For the magazine, I wrote a text titled “Ghriba’s Chameleon”, around my family history in Tunisia, my childhood memories of Djerba, and especially the oldest memory I have: the story of a chameleon trapped inside the synagogue of La Ghriba when I was a child

The text is accompanied by photographs taken during my latest stay within the Jewish community of Djerba
Sight and sounds of the Bajo community in Indonesia

The Bajo are traditionally a semi-nomadic maritime people from Southeast Asia, historically living between boats, reefs and stilt villages built directly above the sea

For generations, their lives have been shaped by fishing, free diving, navigation and an intimate relationship with the ocean

During the past days, I followed fishing trips, night navigation between villages, fish drying under the sun, spearfishing sessions, improvised boat repairs, early morning prayers for Eid and daily life unfolding entirely above the water

After what happened yesterday at the Ghriba "The water of the wadi" let my thoughts wander...

*I often like to compare identity to a river. While the name of the river is always the same, the water in which we bathe is always different.

*The camel stores water in its hump" until it finds a new river, I learned at school. Today, I add that it transports and mixes water.

*The camel is often seen as the emblematic animal of what is called North Africa. In fact, it comes from somewhere else. Mirage.
So there was a pre-Camel period and a post-Camel period.

*I adorn this animal with an ornament engraved with Berber, Jewish, Arab and Tuareg signs and symbols, like the jewelry worn by women during the henna ceremony.

*The dromedaries are passers-by of objects, languages and stories. Circulation, passage, not displeasing the believers of the fixed and immutable identities. As long as there are camels, there will be people to keep them quiet.
