I got to the top of this 15,500 ft pass first and could see a storm brewing in the distance. The light wasn't doing much yet, but I remember thinking, this could be a cool shot if the sun comes out.
When Adam rolled up, we sat there eating crackers and bread, throwing on jackets for the downhill and waiting a few extra minutes.
Then the sun finally broke through.
"Dude, ride down. This shot is going to be epic."
A few seconds later, I got this frame.
We stopped again a couple of meters down the road so Adam could fly the drone, and that's when we saw how massive the storm really was on the other side of the mountain.
We started riding faster.
The storm started moving faster too.
Eventually, the hail and snow caught us.

We booked an Airbnb for a couple nights to reset before tackling the part of the route we’d been looking forward to most: Parque de Los Nevados.
And it somehow exceeded every expectation.
A massive climb with nearly 9,000 ft of elevation gain, followed by a surreal 50-mile descent dropping more than 13,000 ft all the way back toward sea level. Freezing, moody weather above 13,000 ft turned into a humid furnace down below.
Somewhere between the páramo and the heat, Adam got sick — but it still ended up being the most beautiful stretch of the entire trip.

Back in July last year, Adam and I bikepacked an original 750km Chase Regrets routes, crossing coffee farms, national parks, remote villages, jungles and a lot of terrain in between. Along the way, we learned about how climate change is affecting coffee production in the region, shared arepas with strangers living roadside, and donated far too much blood to mosquitos.
There’s honestly too much from this trip to fit into a single post, so this will probably turn into a small series. Because let’s be real - nobody’s reading a novel-length caption while scrolling through 20 slides anyway.

Earlier this year, Georgia and I spent a few weeks moving through the Patagonian mountains, linking up refugios, carrying light packs, and diving into the local mountain culture along the way.
Now I fully understand the obsession with hut-to-hut fastpacking trips. You move lighter, cover more ground, meet people from everywhere, and spend more time actually experiencing the mountains instead of hauling gear around.
Also, in my case, “packing light” somehow still meant making room for cameras, batteries, lenses, microphones, tripods… and way too many pastries.

The way Adam and I operate in the field can be considered pretty chaotic and unorthodox for most. We don't usually say, "hey, I want to take a photo here, can you stop for a second so I can get ahead?" No...that would be way too easy and far too time consuming. We actually sprint ahead with fully loaded bikes as 16,000 feet, throw the bikes to the side of the road and run to compose the image.
That's what peak athleticism looks like in the adventure photo industry.
I made this image the day before Adam's crash in Ausangate. We had just gotten down from a very tall mountain pass, escaping from a hail storm and very cold weather, when this landscape appeared in front of us. Adam had stopped for a photo early on and I passed him, and as soon as I made a turn this frame was revealed. I immediately threw my bike to the side, got my camera out and 10 seconds later, Adam passed me. This was a split second decision and the outcome turned out to be one of the best images I have ever created.
*Thankful for the modern mirrorless tracking autofocus and for my daily 5am interval training.

Why do we feel so attracted to type 2 fun?
Humans are creatures of comfort, so how come we, adventures from all corners of the world, willingly decide to spend our lives in search of our own personal limits?
I'm hostage of my own imagination and curiosity. I feel the urge to live. I feel the urge to experience remote places and tell stories of cultures, landscapes and people.
The inspiration behind the Qhapaq Ñan documentary project was to do just that. To tell untold stories.

Initially, photography was just a way to document my new lifestyle in the mountains, but it quickly evolved into something more. I began looking at light and color differently, my hikes started to take place at 2 am, and I often saw myself carrying a 50lb backpack into the backcountry just to spend the night at locations where I wanted to photograph the sunrise.
It took a while for me to realize what path I wanted to take professionally (and lots of anxiety trying to figure out ways to make it "profitable") but I'm beyond grateful to be able to call myself a professional photographer.
