Riffe wetsuit, carbon fins, so not some beginner who didn’t know better. Both times I went down and said something. Touching them is illegal here and it stresses them out.

Anyway, the dive turned around after that. Sea lion pups, a horn shark, and a leopard shark swarm right in the sand. All 30 minutes from San Diego. 🌊

always important especially as pup season is in full swing, its really really important to always let them approach you and not chase, and on land keeping a significant distance.
It's where they feel most stressed because they aren't as mobile as in the water. Also pups can be abandoned and are not able to swim so they get trapped. Gotta make sure to respect their space especially now. This was shot in december. Anyways hope you enjoy:)

I found this guy off Anacapa Island in the Channel Islands and honestly I’m still processing it. At first glance it looks like a squid — but it’s actually an octopus hijacking a hollow, jelly-like salp as a drifting mobile home.
Scientists still can’t fully explain why they do this. Protection? Camouflage? Free transportation? No one’s sure. The behavior has barely been documented because sightings are so rare.
This species is the only one in its entire family. It lives in open ocean — not on reefs where divers usually look — so most people will never see one. In 16 years of Mediterranean research, scientists only documented two.
I still can’t believe I found one in California.
