As AI rapidly reshapes our world, professor Daniel P. Lopresti has co-authored a Computing Community Consortium white paper calling for coordinated, measurable research efforts to shape the future of artificial intelligence⁠.⁠

Titled “The Imperative for Grand Challenges in Computing,” Lopresti and his peers emphasize the need for defining a unifying “grand challenge” for AI development. They examine a history of grand challenges in science and engineering, then propose a set of prototype challenges built around clear criteria: addressing critical societal needs, pushing the boundaries of what is currently possible, requiring interdisciplinary collaboration, and offering measurable outcomes.⁠

“We’ve seen amazing things with AI, and we’ve also seen troubling ones,” he says. “But if we don’t step back and take a more encompassing view—one that considers all the implications—we risk missing the chance to shape where this technology goes,” says Lopresi.⁠

(LUSI) was recently accepted into the University Nanosatellite Program (UNP). UNP provides the CubeSat team with funding and technical support to advance the development of OSPREY (Ocean Satellite for Plastics Research and Environmental Yield). ⁠

The mission of OSPREY is to capture spectral data of plastics in the ocean to estimate their concentration and distribution and assess impacts on marine ecosystems. UNP directly supports their prototyping and system development efforts while also providing Lehigh interns (Adam Klinge: '28 and Aidan Donnelly: '28) with hands-on training and specialized workshops aimed at preparing the team to produce a launch-ready system. ⁠

LUSI president and MechE major Hannah Peik '27 says, "This acceptance marks a significant step in establishing Lehigh University as a credible contributor to collegiate space systems and satellite development."⁠

This year 8 teams were selected from a large number who applied. Over the 20+ years of the program, there have only been 55 universities participating.
