For my new book, I created all new images and stories meant to bring you back in time, as if you can walk through the streets of the city as it appeared in the 16th century: a Renaissance town with spires and defensive walls, carved façades, and old windows utterly different from the Amsterdam we know today. Forgotten by most, this earlier city was just as legendary, and at its center stood the Old Townhall on the Dam Square.
First raised in the early 15th century, the hall was the brain of civic life. Inside its chambers, burgomasters weighed disputes between merchants over grain shipments, guilds petitioned for privileges, and sentences of banishment or execution were pronounced. Outside on the square, everyday life and sometimes grim spectacles mingled: markets and fish stalls stood beside the scaffolds, where justice was carried out before the eyes of the people.
Twice the hall was nearly lost, in the great fires of 1421 and 1452, yet it rose again from the ashes. In 1535 it became a battlefield during the Anabaptist revolt, when rebels stormed the hall; blood stained the floorboards and bullet holes marked the walls for decades after. From one of its upper windows hung a massive whale bone, a trophy from the northern seas and a reminder that Amsterdam’s fate was bound to the oceans.
By the 17th century, however, the once-proud Old City Hall had become a ruin unfit for a world capital of trade. Its beams sagged, fires had scarred its timbers, and Joost van den Vondel scorned it as crawling with rats. Yet still it served as the stage for grand moments: in 1638, Marie de’ Medici, the exiled Queen of France and mother of Louis XIII, rolled onto Dam Square in a golden carriage, greeted with arches, pageantry, and speeches, only to be received by magistrates in a building visibly falling apart. At last, in the 1640s, the final fire sealed its fate and gave space to what would become the New City Hall, today known as the Royal Palace.

In Amsterdam’s old hofjes, like this one in the Jordaan, people lived pressed together in tight rows of houses around shared courtyards. Privacy was scarce, almost impossible. Neighbors knew each other’s rhythms, secrets, and quarrels, for the walls were thin and the courtyards close. Daily life unfolded in public: washing, sweeping, cooking, children playing, and arguments overheard.
What feels to us like confinement also bred resilience and community. These courtyards gave shelter to widows, the poor, or the elderly, often funded by wealthy benefactors as acts of charity. Here, Amsterdammers carried on with the intimacy of shared space. Bound together by necessity, habit, and the unspoken knowledge that in a city of canals and narrow streets, life was never lived alone.

In the Jordaan the street itself was a living room, crowded and porous, where walls could not contain the lives within them. A woman leans in her doorway, her eyes following the gossiping pair who trade words. The dog noses between their skirts, as if sensing the weight of secrets. From an upper window, a damp cloth hangs heavy, dripping onto the cobbles where hens peck at what the neighbors have tossed out. The smell of turf smoke drifts low, carrying with it cabbage, herring brine, and the bitter sweetness of malt from the brewery down the canal. Voices knot and unravel in the air: complaints of rent, bargains struck, a laugh sharp enough to cut. Here, in these tight alleys, no one lives alone; every doorstep is an audience, every quarrel a theatre. The Jordaan held its people close, binding them in the press of stone and smoke, in the chatter and clatter that never ceased, even when the lanterns flickered on and the day gave itself reluctantly to night.

Born of Samuel Sarphati’s vision, it stood like a shimmering promise: arches of crystal light, a soaring dome, and galleries filled with music, invention, and the murmur of crowds discovering the marvels of their age.
Here, citizens came to be uplifted, to walk among exhibitions of science and art, to hear concerts swell beneath the vaulted ribs of steel.
It was not simply a building; it was a dream made visible,
a crown of progress placed upon the city’s brow.
But on the night of 18 January 1929, fire found it.
In hours, the proud dome was a torch against the winter sky,
glass shattered like frozen tears, iron beams shrieked and fell,
and by morning nothing remained but ash and memory.
Amsterdam woke bereft, for this was not just stone and steel,
but a palace of wonder, a sanctuary where the future once bloomed.
Even now, nearly a century later, the absence of its gleaming halls lingers like an open wound.
The Paleis voor Volksvlijt is remembered as one of the city’s
most magnificent ghosts— a vanished beacon, mourned still as the palace of the people,
consumed by fire, but eternal in longing.

Last night I slept on the boat, held in the hush of the harbor where the masts stood in endless rows, like a front line of spears piercing the mist. The men on the pier seemed carved from the same gray dawn, waiting in silence for the day to begin. In my dreams the ships stirred like great animals, restless yet bound, their sails breathing in the fog. I woke with the sense I had wandered into another century.

Last night I slipped past the guard houses into the harbor, drawn to the tall ships resting beneath the silver hush of the moon. Their sails hung like ghosts in the stillness, carrying traces of journeys I half remembered from another life. The water was tranquil, and all you could hear was the ships creaking softly as the tide shifted beneath them. Time thinned there, and I felt I was floating in a memory not entirely my own.
