In this conversation, Leanne Townsend DCAO Director and Senior Family Law Lawyer sits down with Leona Harvie, DCAO Member and divorce coach, to talk about the emotional realities people face during separation—and why having the right support outside the courtroom matters just as much as the legal strategy inside it.
When clients are emotionally supported and better prepared, they’re able to use their lawyer’s time more effectively—focusing on legal advice and decision-making, rather than crisis management. That leads to clearer conversations, better outcomes, and often less cost and conflict.
🎥 Watch as Leona shares how divorce coaching helps individuals feel steadier, more informed, and better supported through one of life’s most challenging transitions.
I’m tired of hearing “you’re so nice” said like it’s a weakness.
Somewhere along the way, “nice” became code for:
Not tough enough.
Not ambitious enough.
Not serious enough.
Not leadership material.
That narrative is lazy—and wrong.
Being nice does not mean I lack standards. It does not mean I avoid hard conversations. It does not mean I can’t make decisions that disappoint people. It does not mean I lack authority.
What it does mean is this:
I treat people like people. I don’t confuse aggression with strength.
I don’t believe cruelty is a leadership skill. I don’t think dominance is the same as competence.
There is a strange admiration in some professional circles for sharp elbows, cold delivery, and emotional detachment. As if being difficult proves you’re important. As if being feared is better than being respected.
I disagree.
Nice can look like:
• Being clear instead of cutting
• Being firm without being demeaning
• Setting boundaries without humiliation
• Leading without intimidation
Nice is not weak. Weak is hiding insecurity behind hostility.
I have negotiated, led, taught, advised, built, and protected people’s interests without needing to harden my personality into something that doesn’t feel like me.
If being “nice” means:
• I listen before I speak
• I care about outcomes for everyone, not just myself
• I don’t need to perform toughness to feel powerful
Then I’ll take it.
You don’t have to become sharp to be strong. You don’t have to become cold to be credible. You don’t have to become harsh to be taken seriously.
Maybe it’s time we stopped treating decency like a defect.

In this video, Leanne Townsend—DCAO Director and Senior Family Lawyer—sits down with Jennifer Donnison, VP of DCAO, Divorce Coach, and Mediator, to explore how collaborative, client-centred approaches can change the divorce experience for families.
Together, they discuss:
• Why multidisciplinary support matters
• How legal, mediation, and coaching roles work together—not in silos
• What truly helps families move forward with clarity and dignity
At DCAO, we believe divorce support should be informed, ethical, and human. Conversations like this are exactly how that vision comes to life.

I love teaching — not only sharing what I’ve learned over more than 30 years as a lawyer, but also learning from the students themselves. Their questions, perspectives, and curiosity keep me engaged and constantly thinking.
Teaching is a refreshing counterbalance to legal practice — more reflective, more human, and deeply energizing. I’m grateful to be back in the classroom.

2025 tried to slow me down. I lost alignment. I stalled on a goal I’ve been chasing for years, but no more.
This year, my mantra is simple: Be her now.
2026 is about:
🔥 Being unapologetically authentic
🔥 Living fully in alignment
🔥 Prioritizing my health
🔥 Surrounding myself with people who lift me
🔥 Traveling and exploring
🔥 Building my dream, no excuses
No waiting. No “someday.” This is my year. If you too are claiming this year to be your best year yet, comment below with 🚀

The best parts of my life had nothing to do with productivity, achievement, or “doing more.”
They were moments.
With people I love.
Laughing, sweating, eating, moving, showing up.
I did plenty this year. Some of it mattered. A lot of it didn’t.
What did matter was who I was with.
So 2026 isn’t about chasing harder.
It’s about choosing better.
More time with people who feel like home.
More presence. More health. More life happening off camera.
That’s the goal. No big manifesto. Just more of this.

I haven’t done a class like that since before COVID. And let’s be clear: I was by far the oldest person in the room. No hiding that. No pretending I didn’t notice.
I had to make a couple of modifications. That’s reality at 59. But I kept up. I didn’t tap out. I didn’t shrink myself. And I didn’t apologize for where I’m at.
What I’m actually proud of isn’t that I “survived” the class. It’s that at 59, I’m still willing to put myself in situations where I’m not the most comfortable, the most experienced, or the youngest — and that I’m fit enough to train alongside a 22-year-old and a 17-year-old.
This is what staying strong as we age really looks like.
Not perfection. Not ego. Not pretending we’re 30.
It’s showing up, adjusting when needed, and still doing the work.
Comfort is overrated. Strength is earned.

My goal is to be able to do one pull-up by my 60th birthday — June 25, 2026.
The first video shows where I am today.
The second shows where I started on December 8, 2025.
I’ve made some progress — not dramatic, but real — and I still have a lot of work to do. Pull-ups require relative strength, and maintaining (and building) strength becomes increasingly important as we age. It’s not about chasing extremes — it’s about staying capable, resilient, and confident in our bodies.
I’m training consistently, paying attention to the details, and giving myself the time this goal deserves.
This is what strength-building looks like in real life for a busy lawyer who feels burnt out at times but still prioritizes working out despite the burnout.

I’m grateful for the trust clients place in me during some of the most difficult moments of their lives. It’s a privilege to do this work, and a reminder of how important it is to care for our own health and perspective so we can show up well for others.
Wishing you a Christmas filled with peace, rest, and time with the people who matter most.
