Commissioned by the 1st Earl of Craven in 1662, Ashdown House is a Dutch-style hunting lodge built in tribute to the Earl’s great love, the impoverished but beautiful Elizabeth Stuart, known as the Winter Queen of Bohemia.
Described as having doll’s house proportions, Ashdown was constructed from Berkshire chalk blocks, giving It’s facade a sublime “chalky” patina.
Elizabeth Stuart was called “The Winter Queen” due to the fact that that she only reigned in Bohemia for one winter before being forced into exile with her husband Frederick V, their 13 children and her menagerie of pet monkeys.
She was also an older sister of Charles l of England, whose execution put her in extreme personal, financial and political peril.
After being widowed in 1632, Elizabeth remained deposed in Holland for the next 30 years. During that time she was under the protection of her husband’s debonair ex-military commander, William Craven, who was one of the wealthiest men in England - and completely besotted with her (and presumably her countless children and assortment of pet monkeys!)
After the restoration of Elizabeth’s nephew, Charles ll, to the English throne, she and William were finally free to return home, where the earl commissioned Ashdown House for her as a hunting retreat and refuge from the London plague. Elizabeth was an avid fox hunter..
Craven continued to support the former queen both emotionally and financially for the rest of her life and many believed that they were secretly married.
Their lockets shown above from Philip Mould Gallery certainly suggest that possibility.
Sadly, Elizabeth Stuart died of pneumonia before Ashdown could be completed, but the “dollhouse made of chalk” survives today as an incredibly charming homage to her love story with the Earl of Craven, who remained a bachelor until his death 35 years later.

Ending and beginning the year with a favorite post, the powder blue shutters of Villa Sola Cabiati on Lake Como..
Inscribed in stone above the entrance are the words “Villulae Quietem” which translates to “the stillness of a small villa.”
Interesting Facts:
The Neoclassical Italian villa houses a bed slept in by Napoleon Bonaparte and articles of clothing belonging to the Empress Josephine, still folded in a trunk from her visit to Milan in 1796.
~The items were transported to Lake Como by the Serbelloni family (whose descendants still own the villa) from their Milanese palazzo, narrowly escaping the air raids of World War ll..
The six bedroom villa is available for stays through Grand Hotel Tremezzo

~ Eight hundred years of falling French foliage heralds the first whispers of autumn at Abbaye de Royaumont..
The luminous reflection of this early Gothic masterpiece looks like a medieval egg tempera gessoed upon the lake, still golden after eight centuries..
Some History:
Abbaye de Royaumont was built in 1228 by the boy king of France, Louis IX, and his formidable Regent/Mother Blanche de Castille, who was a granddaughter of Eleanor of Acquitaine..
Known as Louis the Saint, the devout king led the Seventh Crusade to the Holy Land (1248-54) accompanied by his wife, Marguerite of Provence..
He was inconveniently captured by Egyptian Mamluk warriors just as the queen was giving birth to a baby son in the nearby city of Damietta...
The royal couple was eventually ransomed for 80,000 gold florins and returned to France with their petit prince, Tristan (sorrow)..
The young prince was buried at the abbey 16 years later..
