Filmmaker Devan Homis brings us this story, and his own journey is just as compelling. After earning five Emmy nominations and two wins creating extreme sports documentaries for others, Devan decided to stop building other people's visions and start building his own. That's how Fish the West Films was born.
Five years ago, fly fishing changed Devan's life. 🐟 Struggling emotionally, he borrowed neoprene waders and stepped into the Beaverkill River in upstate New York for the first time. "Somewhere in that moment, standing in the river, I found a kind of peace I hadn't felt in a long time. It changed the course of my life."
He's been obsessed ever since -- exploring new waters, chasing new species, and spending as much time as possible in that flow state. "There was something about the wild places, the moving water, and the distinct character each river seemed to carry. It felt personal. Spiritual, even."

📸: The more time you spend watching before you cast, the more fish you will find.
📸: "The San Francisco Bay isn’t hard to fish; it’s just different. And once you understand how tides, structure, and bait intersect, it becomes one of the most consistent fisheries in California." - George Revel

Diesel wasn’t just along for it; he got why we go. Most of the time, he was the reason we went.
Once, standing in the surf up to his elbows, he went on point, locked up like he had been doing it his whole life. Then he plunged his head into the water and kicked up a striper like it was exactly what he was meant to do. In that moment, I knew he got it.
The loss isn’t something to resolve; it’s something you sit with, the way you would a stretch of river you’ve fished for years, trying to notice a single rock that’s gone missing.
It’s the absence that stands out most. A quiet chasm. His absence feels outsized, like I have lost a piece of myself, like I am missing an appendage.
Now there is just a place where he used to be, on the beach, in the truck, on the river, in the chair at the shop. He was always there. I keep catching myself looking for him there.
I love you, Buddy. Enjoy the happy hunting ground, and I will see you after a few more chapters.
It’s not just the sourdough and skyline—San Francisco might just be the best urban fly fishing destination in the country.
In our Spring issue, Editor-at-Large and owner George Revel ranks the City by the Bay across five key angling qualities: accessibility, seasonality, quality of fishing, heritage, and community. The result? A compelling case for why SF deserves a top spot on every fly angler’s list.
After all, it's the birthplace of and, home to legends like Tim and Steve Rajeff, Cal Bird, Sheridan Anderson, and iconic fly fishing photographer —just to name a few.
