Now and Then Herb School is dedicated towards the ongoing practice of unpacking how systems of power and oppression impact health and healing. Our programs are oriented through a social justice lens. We believe that an anti-oppressive framework is essential to an inclusive herbal education.
Founded in 2019 by friends Sam Roberts and Renée Camila, both clinical and community herbalists, Now and Then Herb School offers herbal classes and trainings that value embodied learning, recognizing plants as people, and understanding that systemic oppression impacts healthcare.
We believe disconnection is a core wound we all share under capitalism. Herbcraft and plant magic are vital tools in our pursuit of collective liberation as well as our personal and community healthcare. We support each student in investigating their own ancestry to empower their own herbal practice.
Come back to school with us this fall with one of three pathways: The Home Herbalist, our foundational path, The Community Herbalist, our certification path, or The Herbal Oracle, our plant communication path. This year we are offering an in-person cohort of The Home Herbalist in the East Bay on unceeded Chochenyo, Ohlone land.
All of our programs offer sliding scale payment plans at no extra cost. The online programs start the first week of September. The in-person cohort of The Home Herbalist begins in October.

Did you hear? We’re teaching in person this year!
Our first ever program, what is now called The Home Herbalist, was created in 2019 (before we were officially an herb school!) and it was intended to be in-person.
By spring of 2020 it became clear that we needed to pivot the in-person program to something that could be offered online. So we did, and it was magical!
We’ve held space for many cohorts in three different programs online for five years now. Because of the reach of the internet, we’ve been able to gather with folks beyond the geographical constraints within the rural communities where we live. Our cohorts are beautifully diverse in age, race, gender, and beyond.
This last week we invited all the students from the various cohorts to gather with us by a river for our first ever school campout. That experience really solidified how vital it is for us to gather online AND in person to really cultivate intimacy with each other and to continue the work that herbal activism requires.
So we are beyond thrilled that we’re offering The Home Herbalist in person this year, as we had originally intended!
We’re gathering for 4 seasonal weekends in Huichin, also known as Oakland, California. Shoutout to our dear friend and colleague for offering their space.
