When introducing a new plant:
Always inspect a new plant, every inch, every under leaf, every crack. It should be happy and perfect, the new leaves should be immaculate!!! I will usually shower new plants and sometimes spray a little bit of black soap on them. I very ofter change the soil, not just for pest but because I like my chunky mixe! Quarantine is the gold standard but it’s not an option in this house so I just keep a close eye on them.
Topical treatment for outbreaks depending on the pest:
-Spider mites and mealy bugs: rubbing alcool or black soap every week for 1-2 months and then back to predatory insects.
-Flat mites: Sulfur every week for 1-2 months and then back to predatory mites.
-Thrips: Burn the plant five times and treat it’s neighbors for life! This isn’t a joke, we don’t mess with thrips in this house, there’s a jungle to protect!
-Try to avoid direct sunlight after a topical treatment because leaves can burn.
Benificial insects:
-Amblyseius swirskii for thrips prevention. I suggest using Orius insidiosus or Chrysoperla carnea first if you have actually seen a thrip or a larva.
-Neoseiulus californicus for spider mites and flat mites prevention. If you have just treated for and outbreak and the infestation is still fresh, I suggest using Phytoseiulus persimilis first, then neoseiulus californicus.
-I also have 5-6 plants with reluctant mealy bugs so I treat with Cryptolaemus montrouzieri to control the infestation.
-I introduce them only every 2 months because I have no active infestations.
Know that unhappy plants attract pest, they can feel weakness!
Also remember that an infestation can appear out of nowhere, even if you are doing everything right. Being 100% pest free is basically utopic, you just have to find a way to control outbreaks.
I keep topical treatments for local infestations only because at this stage, it’s what works best, but for maintenance, I like the peace of mind of having beneficial insects doing the hard work and eating pests at the larva stage before they can proliferate.
Early detection is still important so inspecting/admiring your plants often still has a role in protecting them.
