My dogs and I often go for walks with an invisible lead. That means that there is no physical tether, but rather an understanding and commitment to us walking together as if we are one.

If I stop, they stop. If I change directions, they change with me. If they’re not sure, they check in by looking at me and asking which way next. None of this comes from verbal cues. It just comes from an awareness of each other as one. This is not right for everyone though, and whilst I am confident in this walk for me and my dogs, I would only recommend to a handful of people. I am very lucky to live in a rural area, where there are very few surprises and very few blind corners to walk around. And where they are, I avoid.

This is very different to the exceptional training of dogs who are in obedience trials and heel with an impressive prance right alongside their handler. We don’t do that.

I’d never do this in a built up area, or any area that would risk my dog or another dog being confronted. It is a joy training Harry and being able to use the invisible leash has taken me the best part of two years. Two years of building trust and respect through empathic training.

His recall is exceptional. His ‘leave it’ cue is second to none. I know completely that if I call him away from anything (absolutely anything!) that he will listen. Again, this does not happen for every dog or human.

If this is not right for you and your dog, that does not mean you have failed. It does not mean your dog doesn’t trust you or that you’re doing the wrong thing. It means that for you and your dog the most respectful and safe approach to a good walk for all is to walk on a lead together. In fact putting your dog on a lead makes you the responsible dog owner. Those who let their dogs off lead without any means of managing their dog’s behaviour safely and respectfully could learn a lesson from you.

Whilst I will always advocate for responsibility and respect in my field - it’s sometimes nice just to see how capable dogs can be with their humans, when the stars align.
So much more to your dog stopping and sniffing in that one spot! There is a whole other world out there that we will never see
 or smell.
Simple enrichment often works better than expensive toys because:

* It changes frequently
* It feels novel
* It encourages interaction rather than passive entertainment
* Dogs can manipulate and “destroy” it
* It engages multiple senses simultaneously

Examples of highly effective low-cost enrichment:

* Scatter feeding in grass
* Snuffle towels or blankets
* Cardboard boxes with treats hidden inside
* Egg cartons with food
* Frozen lick mats
* Scent trails around the house or backyard
* Digging pits
* Rotating toys instead of leaving them all out
* Safe shredding activities using paper or cardboard
* “Treasure hunts” with hidden food

Most importantly enrichment gives your dog agency. Rose loves this box for so many reasons. It was novel, nobody said ‘be careful not to break it’, she could control her space, there was laughter.

Ah aren’t kids and dogs just the best?!
Recommend sound on - just to hear Rose sigh 😂

Firstly, it’s never acceptable for a child to approach a dog when they are on their dog bed, or resting in ‘their space’. There are no exceptions to this rule in my opinion. I don’t even do it!!

So why have I permitted it here?

- This dog bed has no value to Harry outside of him being asleep on it. If he is sitting in it, resting in it, asleep in it
. It is a NO GO ZONE to the rest of us!
- Rose was sitting there well and truly before he approached her
- she never approaches him, he instigates the interaction the whole time
- she never touches him, she never takes anything he doesn’t want her to have or engage with.
- the interaction is mutually consensual
- I am supervising the entire interaction. The camera is set up, but I am right next to them at all times.

Golden rule - if dog is resting, asleep, sitting, approaching, guarding or possessive of their safe space?? That’s their space and nobody is to approach it. Ever.
In many studies, women reported that seeping with their dog resulted a better sleep, compared to sleeping with their partner. They also reported that they felt:
* Comfort
* Security
* Reduced loneliness
* Reduced anxiety
* Emotional attachment
When compared to other relationships that weren’t with their dog.

This doesn’t necessarily mean they had better sleep, as there can definitely be disruptions to sleeping with ANYONE, but feeling safe and secure certainly was noted.

Who do you sleep best with? Don’t ask me, I have two girls under two, two dogs and a magnificent snoring husband. I don’t get any sleep! But I’d love to hear your stories!
Yep - research shows dogs who sleep in with the family live longer. Here are some reasons why:
* Reduced exposure to cars, toxins, snake bites, extreme weather, parasites, and infectious disease
* Earlier detection of illness (owners notice subtle changes sooner)
* More social interaction and supervision
* Better sleep quality and stress regulation for many companion dogs
* Less risk of trauma, roaming, fights, or getting lost

Now my caveat here is on choice! There will be a minority of dogs that do not choose, benefit or desire being inside a home. Best way to find out is to open the door and see what the dog does. Harry let me know his choice the day we met.

What does your dog choose?
Happiness is when we share moments with those we love. This was one of them. Rose and Harry are closely connected. So much so you even see her mimic him when he shakes off something from his nose - she copies him.

Never underestimate the profound influence a dog has on your child’s development. On their happiness. On their life.

Foster trust and respect and this is what happens.
I love this video. Rose opened the door to stand in the rain. - all her decision. Bare feet too! She went looking for puddles to jump in and had a blast.

Harry didn’t step out those doors once. He watched on as if to say ‘why on earth would you choose to stand in the rain?’ For Rose, it was the novelty. The sensation of cold water dropping on her face. For Harry, it was known discomfort and cold.

Sometimes we think we know what is best for them, but often it is better to allow them to make choices on their own. Giving agency to children and dogs gives them a powerful sense of purpose, independence, and confidence to make a few. A joy to watch. If the outcome is safe, let them do it.
We are so grateful to share this news with you all. Allow us to introduce you to Wren Evelyn Love. Our little chirping bird was born on Monday morning and has already lit up the world with such joy and love.

Allow us to thank the magnificent med team at Mercy Women’s Hospital, for taking care of us like family. Thank you to for not just her extraordinary care, but the lengths she goes to for her patients. She is simply the best OBGYN and it is no surprise how much she is loved by all!

Thank you to our mums. For cooking, caring for Rose, making us laugh and caring for us under your giant motherly wings. We are very grateful. And to our boys. Harry and Cashew, you have once again accepted the transition of your lives with such kindness and care. You are also our children and we will love and protect you endlessly.

Thank you, my ‘support person’ (😂), great love and proud father in our family. You are the soul to our family, and the backbone and heart. We love you so much and I am so truly grateful to be able to sit next you on this chaotic ride, with my hands in yours and head on your broad shoulders. Thank you endlessly. You are so deeply loved.

Thank you to Chester. You were with me the whole time Wren was being born and we both felt your love and guidance. Thank you for teaching me what the deepest and truest love feels and looks like. I carry that within me each and every day, following in your footsteps. I see in this family a love that began with you and that love will transcend beyond all our lifetimes on this earth, with you at its core. My love.

Welcome Wren. You are a sweet song bird chirping to the world full of light and love. And we will spend every moment of our days making sure you feel this light and love too.

Thank you for respecting my privacy as I try to fathom how there can ever be a tomorrow, when I no longer have a sun.
