The goal was to make every rep look the same. How’d we do?

Yes I know the made reps aren’t pretty, but if you made it that far in the video you’d know that wasn’t really the point.

at last year’s masters world championships.

I’ve coached her from her first national championships, to her first pan ams, to her first worlds and now to her first masters worlds.

There have been some real highs and lows along the way like surgeries on both shoulders and being bumped off a world team with the very last lift that could have done it.

This sport is ridiculous.

But somehow enjoyable.

Sometimes.

To be honest, it’s my fault no one sees that part cause I’m pretty bad at posting but that’s neither here nor there…
For some context, I aggravated my shoulder pretty bad in April (shown here) leading up to Nationals this year and was laid up for a couple weeks, forcing me to start a rebuild 8 weeks out. And this is what that process looked like.

To this day - this was one of the most exciting and fun competitions I’ve ever done mostly because I defied my own odds, lifted weights I didn’t even touch in my training leading up to it, AND proved to myself (maybe for the first time ever) that you don’t have to have big training numbers to have big platform numbers.

He pours my coffee first.
He makes me food without asking cause he know I won’t make it for myself.
He loads my golf clubs in the car for me every single time.
He lets me take the ball out of the sand trap.
He leaves surprise notes for me everywhere.
He reminds me to pack snacks. Or packs them for me.
He opens the blinds in the morning cause he knows I like to wake up with the sun.
He gives me his sunglasses when it’s bright and I forgot mine.

Yeah this is corny but he deserves it because he’s amazing. 😊

Happy Anniversary Christopher Wayne, I love you.
Finding consistency in my routine again…

I have a tendency to want to fly by the seat of my pants so routines can be hard for me to follow for an extended period of time, but they’re also completely necessary for me to stay on top of my shit and I feel so much better when I’m on top of my shit.

I’ll just miss you a lot.
I don’t think it’s talked about enough, how much an injury impacts an athlete long-term not just physically but mentally. And, as someone who has helped and continues to help athletes recover from injuries for half my life, I don’t think I understood the effects an injury could have once the recovery process was “complete.”

I sometimes get so frustrated having to think about/consider the state of my shoulders each day, how they feel, how they’re going to feel, how they felt yesterday etc.

I wanted to never have to think about it again.

I now understand that this has changed me as an athlete and a person more than I could have ever predicted. But it definitely didn’t happen overnight, and in the beginning there was a lot of “shoulds.”

I “should” be able to lift this weight…like who makes that determination?!?! Why was I arbutrarily deciding when the “right time” was to be able to do something? And not just anything, but like lift a lot of weight, over my head, often, like daily, after 2 shoulder surgeries, at 35+ years old?!
When for YEARS, I’d been preaching to my own athletes:
-no recovery is the same
-you can’t be married to a timeline
-there will be bumps in the road
-you will plateau
-you will have set backs
-Don’t. Freak. Out.

All these things are absolutely true, all of them happened, and for the most part they all resulted in a freak out, with tears, on FaceTime with (bless him).

So I guess what I’m trying to say is:
• it’s ok to learn the hard way
• it’s ok for goals to change
• it’s ok if it looks and feels different than it once did, different isn’t bad

You might be surprised to find a new found confidence or a new found joy in what you’re doing.

I entered Nationals 2025 with a few goals, but very few expectations. I also entered with a confidence I’d never felt before even at my strongest and healthiest. (Of which I am neither at current state.)

And I surprised the hell out of myself in the best way.

So am I thankful for my injuries and the setbacks and the tears?? I don’t know about THANKFUL, but I can absolutely say they served a purpose and I am better for all of it.
