Son los African Hebrew Israelites of Jerusalem, una comunidad de origen afroamericano que llegó a Israel en los años 60. Afirman descender de los primeros israelitas y han construido en Dimona una forma de vida completamente comunitaria.
Combinan telas africanas con uniformes azules, llevan kipás de croché, cuelgan en sus casas retratos de su fundador, Ben Ammi Ben-Israel, y han practicado formas familiares como la poligamia dentro de su estructura religiosa. Reconocidos legalmente por el Estado de Israel, pero no como judíos por sus autoridades religiosas.
Dimona. I had never heard of this place before, nor after working on a report there. Now it is in the news because of its nuclear complex. I was there for a different reason: to document a peculiarity on its outskirts, the “Village of Peace” community.
They are the African Hebrew Israelites of Jerusalem, a community of African American origin that arrived in Israel in the 1960s. They claim to descend from the first Israelites and have built in Dimona a fully communal way of life.
They combine African fabrics with blue uniforms, wear crocheted kippahs, display portraits of their founder, Ben Ammi Ben-Israel, and have practiced family structures such as polygamy within their religious framework. Legally recognized by the State of Israel, but not as Jews by its religious authorities.

Llevo años fotografiando la Semana Santa para medios internacionales, contando lo visible. Hasta que decidí mirar por otro lado: por debajo.
Esta serie nació de ese cambio. Se publicó a través de AP a nivel internacional, al siguiente año la serie renovada en The New York Times y más tarde se expuso en ESTAMPA. Funcionó taparse los oídos y mirar lo cotidiano como un paisaje nuevo.
More than ten years ago I began photographing costaleros—the men who carry the weight of the processional floats during Holy Week. I was interested in understanding who they were beyond tradition. Not all of them believe, not all of them seek the same thing, but they all seem to find something similar: a sense of belonging.
For years I have been photographing Holy Week for international media, focusing on what is visible. Until I decided to look elsewhere: underneath.
This series was born from that shift. It was distributed internationally through AP, the following year an updated version was published in The New York Times, and later it was exhibited at ESTAMPA. It worked to shut out the noise and look at the everyday as if it were a new landscape.

A project led by the CAF and advised by the IAPH, exploring the Andalusian rural landscape through the gaze of eight photographers.
The exhibition can be visited at the Centro Andaluz de la Fotografía in Almería until May 28.
