This photo is part of a photography series called "Dit is ons leven" [These are our lives], in which the Boys Won't Be Boys cast is captured by Frans. Boys Won't Be Boys is a theatre show that seeks to eradicate stereotypes of gender through performance art. Vulnerability is at the core of the show; we perform (/don't perform) "as ourselves". Gender is the script that we throw in the bin. No roleplaying. At the end of every show, Rikkert van Huisstede confesses to the audience: "This actually wasn't a show, these are our lives." With this photo series, I want to capture that message. Challenging gender stereotypes, being extravagant, soft, emotional, queer, sensual, is not always just about being theatrical. It's about who we are.
At the same time, this raises questions like: how safe are gender non conforming people? Are we as safe on a stage as we are in our daily lives? Will you celebrate us when we don't entertain you? But also: who is "we" and who is "you"? Aren't we all suffering from gendered expectations?
The photos will be exhibited at the OBA CC Amstel soon, as well as some other places.
